Planting Adonis is really a breeze. Only in the subsequent care there is a lot to consider.

Cultivate Adonis roses

Only a few years ago it was not uncommon to encounter the Adonis flower in Europe in the wild. In our latitudes, this is hardly the case today. Many natural locations of the plant had to give way to modern buildings. The plants have a long history and were already used in ancient times as medicinal plants.

Cultivating the plants in your home garden will certainly pose some challenges. But you will also be rewarded with an attractive eye-catcher and a rich flowering. But not only the right planting is important, so that the Adonis rose flourishes magnificently. Above all, it depends on the right care. Below are the most important care instructions at a glance.

Water adonis properly

A special feature of the plant are the widely branched taproots. Thus, the plant defies even barren conditions. The roots can reach up to 80 centimeters deep and make the supply of water possible even during prolonged periods of drought. As may already be surmised, Adonis florets in the bed survive even longer dry periods and do not necessarily have to be irrigated regularly. An exception are young plants and plants that have been freshly planted. In the first year you must water them regularly. The best watering times are the early morning and early evening hours.

The irrigation water should be able to drain off as quickly as possible. Therefore, it makes sense to create a casting edge. In addition, you should loosen up the soil sufficiently. Also advisable is the introduction of potsherds or gravel. This prevents the formation of waterlogging. Even in the cold season, you should regularly check the soil in young plants and water if necessary on frost-free days. The substrate should never completely dry out.

Tip:
Adonis can be poured with tap water, because calcareous water does not harm them. An exception is the Amur Adonis, which does not like lime and should be watered with rainwater. Reading tip: catch rainwater and use it as irrigation water - 3 possibilities presented.

Fertilize Adonis florets properly

For the early flowering of the Adonis, the fertilization is important at planting. If you mix the substrate with compost and horn chips, the plant has sufficient nutrients available. If temperatures fall below ten degrees, the Adonis flower can no longer use organic fertilizer. The summer Adonis flower is fertilized in the spring. In late summer, fertilizers can make the plants fit for the winter.

Do Adonis have to be cut back?

You do not have to make a pruning in the traditional sense with the Adonis flower. Nevertheless, you should regularly check the plant. Withered leaves and dead shoots should be removed in a timely manner and cut back to ground level. In addition, regularly remove withering inflorescences, this promotes the formation of new buds. When the Adonis are dead, the plants retreat into themselves. From the leaves and shoots the nutrient resources are exhausted and saved for the next flowering period.

Important:
Be sure to wear gloves when pruning, as the exuding plant sap is poisonous and can cause allergic reactions. Incidentally, this also applies if you plant the Adonis flower. Always wear gloves.

This is how adonis are properly wintered

Older Adonis are adapted to the local conditions and hardy. Even at minus degrees in the double-digit range no additional protection is necessary. An exception are seedlings and young plants dar. Especially the root system is not sufficiently pronounced in this case and therefore need the Adonisröschen a winter protection of leaves or brushwood.

Tip:
Be sure to remove the winter protection promptly in the spring so that the plant is not prevented from sprouting.

If you have planted the plants in the tub, you should wrap this with garden fleece. You also need to cover the ground with leaves or brushwood. On dry and frosty days, the seedlings should also receive low watering.

Detect and combat pests and diseases on the Adonis flower

There is no danger for spring adonis. The plants are more in bloom than pests are found in the bed. No diseases have been observed in the plant, so you get a particularly robust plant representative in the bed.

The biggest enemies of Adonisröschens are snails.Nocturnal snails go for the finely feathered leaves, and it takes only a few nights to clear the Adonis flower. To prevent a snail attack, you can take some measures, which will now be described in more detail.

Plants against snails:

A proven home remedy is the use of plant extracts in slug infestations. This is how spraying with liverwort concentrate has proven itself. Even kitchen herbs like thyme, rosemary or sage do not like the snails. Simply spread the branches around the plant. Of course you have to repeat this at regular intervals, as the herbs are carried away by the wind and lose their aroma over time.

Copper wire against snails:

Copper wire is the cheapest alternative to commercially available worm fences. The use of copper wire is useful if individual plants are to be protected. Simply twist several layers of wire into a drawstring. Then form a ring from this cord and put it around the plant. Of slugs it is usually not crossed.

Eggshells, sand or cat litter against snails:

Effective barriers to nudibranches can be created with these substances. If eggshells are crushed, sharp-edged fragments are produced, which are avoided by the snails. Also, around the plant attached edge of sand or cat litter is avoided by snails. The only problem: the screw guard needs to be replaced regularly.
