Angel trumpet - Brugmansia

Especially due to the poisonous flowers, it is extremely important in the angel trumpet that you always clean your cutting tool very well after use. You can do this optimally by disinfecting after thoroughly cleaning the scissors or knife with water and detergent.
The subsequent disinfection deepens the degree of purification again, removes any residual flowers and also reliably removes any bacteria, viruses or other pathogens, which could easily be transferred to other plants without additional disinfection, if you treat them with the same cutting tool.
For disinfection you have three different options:
Heat
You can disinfect the cutting sides of garden shears or a knife blade well in a flame. However, not every fire / flame is suitable for this because it must be able to get hot. Therefore, you should limit yourself purely to a gas bunsen burner or a spirit flame. Hold the cutting unit low for a few seconds in the lower part of the flame, as this is where the highest temperatures prevail. Make sure that especially the cut surfaces are well heated from both sides.
isopropanol
Another possibility is the disinfection with isopropanol. It is a special type of alcohol that kills germs, viruses and bacteria as a 70 percent solution. Isopropanol is available in pharmacies, drugstores and wherever medical supplies are sold. Alternatively, the disinfection with pure alcohol is also suitable. This is to be mixed in a ratio of 7: 1 with distilled water. In either case, dip the cutting tool into the solution and leave it there for about two minutes. Make sure that all parts are covered by the solution. To dry, place the cutting tool on a clean kitchen roll and let it dry briefly in the air. After that it is ready for use.
Chemical disinfection
Without special preparation, you can also clean cutting tools with chemical disinfectants. Here, for example, the specialist manufacturer for plant and garden Neudorff offers the NeudoClean hygiene spray. This has the advantage that the spraying is done quickly and after 60 seconds the devices are disinfected. A dry season or solution preparation is not necessary here.

cutting technology

Basically, a Brugmansia, as the angel's trumpet is called botanical, should always be cut diagonally on the branch. This ensures a smaller cut surface and thus wound area, through which bacteria and other pathogens can enter the plant interior. Therefore, the general rule is: the smaller the incision, the lower the risk of disease.
In addition, a beveled interface ensures that water can drain off completely, while water can stand on top of a straight wound. In the latter case, this would mean that the wound would take a longer time to dry and then close again. Again, this is important to avoid the entry of pathogens. So: always cut at an angle!

wound care

Who wants to play it safe, closes the cuts in the form of a seal. This can be done by resin or wax, which are also available from specialist dealers as finished mass. This is particularly useful when cutting in late autumn, as high humidity can significantly delay the healing and in addition to the cold, the wounds often begin to "bleed". If you decide for a seal only days after the pruning, a disinfection must be carried out beforehand. To do this, dust the cuts with coal dust or cinnamon flour.

Detect cutting area

Angel trumpet - Brugmansia

Before you just start cutting or following the cut instructions for other plants, you should know that the Brugmansia has a particular growth habit that makes it very different from other plants and needs to be considered for pruning for improved growth.
Blühregion
This container plant first protrudes straight up without branching. Here the shoot lays down first, before it splits in height for the first time. With this division, the so-called flowering area is formed, which usually already forms a bud at the first branching. Behind this arises usually already the second division. From now on, flowers will thrive in this area during the flowering season between May and October.
Only a pruning of the flowering area ensures improved growth of Brugmansia and more flowers. The more numerous the divisions, the more flowers you can enjoy. Only the flowering area is cut.
leaf types
For you, the particular growth of the Brugmansia means that you can cut them off only at the top, which results from the first division. You can also recognize the flowering area on the leaves. As a rule, the leaves grow asymmetrically in the Blühregion. That is, one leaf side is set higher on the petiole than on the other leaf side. In contrast, there are the symmetrical leaves, in which both sides of the leaf start at the same height on the petiole. These are almost exclusively found only in the lower part of the plant outside the Blühregion. Only occasionally are symmetrical leaves visible in the flowering area.
To cut
In the flowering area, the Brugmansia is very robust and tolerates cutbacks that extend to the first branching. The pruning in this area promotes height growth as well as the growth of a dense leaf dress and the buds or flowers. In the lower area is usually not cut. New, just-growing shoots are also triggered by the pruning in the flowering area. In this way angel trumpets also increase in scope. Although a lateral discharge in the so-called growth zone can be forced, but unfortunately this does not increase the amount of flowers.

autumn section

Before the angel trumpet moves to its winter quarters, a pruning can be useful if there is not enough space.
Follow this guide:
  • Cut away only as much as is absolutely necessary
  • Never cut deeper than 30 centimeters above the first branch
  • Do not cut at frost
  • If necessary, put the plant in the warm place so that the cuts can dry out
  • Alternatively, seal the interfaces

intercut

Angel trumpet - Brugmansia

If the winter quarters of your angel trumpet are relatively warm and bright, it is possible that so-called winter shoots sprout during hibernation. Since these are usually very thin and powerless, have little to no branching and the leaf dress is pale, they should be cut off as early as possible. They unnecessarily take away the energy and nutrients the angel's trumpet needs in spring to form strong and healthy shoots.

Early years section

If in the spring the cold makes room for warmer temperatures and at the latest from the Eisheiligen no frost is to be expected, it is time for the spring cut at the Engelstrompete. As with the winter cut, it should end at least 30 centimeters above the first fork above the growth area.
TIP: Incidentally, cut shoots can be used as cuttings, and in this way they can attract new seedlings themselves if you place the shoot tips in potting soil and keep them well moist. After about three weeks roots have formed and the young plant can be potted.

radically cut

A Radikalschnitt is always a high load for each plant and especially for the angel trumpet. But if a plant does not recover properly from a disease or pest infestation, radical cutting is usually the last resort to keeping the Brugmansia alive. It's always worth a try and the chances are not so bad if you proceed as follows:
  • Pruning to the growth area of the straight stems / trunks
  • Only pruning as deep as absolutely necessary (not deeper than 20 centimeters above the surface of the earth)
  • Do not fertilize for at least the first six weeks afterwards
  • Make the plant warm and bright
