The Content Of The Article:

Designating ants as harmful animals is simply wrong, because the hardworking insects are extremely effective pest killers. The red forest ant (Formica rufa) lives mainly on forest edges and on clearings and is under protection of species. A forest ant colony captures up to 100,000 invertebrates per day. Of course, ants do not differentiate between beneficial organisms and pests according to human standards, but numerous herbivorous insects such as butterfly caterpillars and leaf beetle larvae are also on the menu.

From Beneficial to the LĂ€stling

Nevertheless, ants have a few bad habits from a horticultural point of view: they protect aphids from predators to harvest their sugary excrements - honeydew. Some species also prefer to nest their nest caves under sunny terraces, because the paving stones heat up very quickly in the spring. From time to time it even happens that ants nibble sweet, mostly overripe fruits - but these damages are very limited.

Ants species in the garden

There are two species of ants in the garden: the black path ant (Lasius niger) and the yellow path ant (Lasius flavus). The black path ant is the more common species and is often simply called garden ant.
An ant colony consists of up to 500 workers, usually between three and five millimeters tall. As food serves the black path ants mainly honeydew of aphids, scale insects, leafflies and cicadas, but they also live predatory and capture various insect species. The aphid culture has almost perfected the garden ants, because they even move the pests to other plants that are closer to their construction. The highly adaptable ants prefer to build their nests under paved areas and sometimes invade homes.

The Black Way Ant likes to nest under nests

The yellow path ant is with two to four millimeters body length significantly smaller than the black way ant. She prefers to lay her nest under lawns and can pile up mounds to the size of a molehill. These are often noticed only at second glance, as they are often overgrown with grass and have only a few exits. The Yellow Way Ant keeps underground root-lions colonies and lives almost exclusively on the honeydew of these insects. Therefore, these ants rarely leave their construction. A state of the Yellow Way Ant is mostly founded by several queens. Later, the queens fight each other until only the strongest remains.

Resettle ant nests

If the ants in your garden are getting annoying, you do not have to fight them right away. In many cases, it is enough if you simply move the animals. This works as follows: Place flower pots filled with wood wool face down on the ant roads and just wait. After some time, the ants begin to move their nest into the flowerpot. You can tell by the insects bringing their dolls to the new accommodation. Wait for the procession to complete and then pick up the flowerpot with a shovel. The new location should be at least 30 meters from the old nest, as the ants would otherwise return to their old structure.

Prevent ant nests

If possible, create new terraces and garden paths so that they are not attractive as nesting sites for ants. Avoid using paving sand as bedding for the paving stones and use basalt chippings instead. In addition, you can seal the joints with special plaster grout based on synthetic resin. There are now products that make the pavement ants and weeds, but let the rainwater through.

Natural expelling agents

There are several home remedies whose fragrances and essential oils do not like ants. These include lavender flowers, cinnamon, cloves, chilli powder or lemon peel. Simply spread the substances on ant nests and roads. Chalk powder or garden lime have proven to be an ant barrier as well. For example, you can simply sprinkle a thin line in front of house entrances and additionally provide the walls with a thick chalk line. The ants do not cross the alkaline substances.

Fight ants with home remedies

For direct control of ants, there are also home remedies. Best used is stale beer, which was enriched with a tablespoon of honey. Fill it into a flat bowl with vertical walls and place it on an ant street. The sweet smell attracts the ants, they fall into the liquid and drown. Incidentally, baking powder is very unreliable, although it is recommended over and over again as a home remedy for ant control. Contrary to popular belief, the ants do not eat the baking powder, but can die from chemical burns on contact with the alkaline substance.
