The bark mulch is becoming increasingly popular. Thus, the colored decomulch is also increasingly found in private gardens, as well as in public gardens. What is important in the use of bark mulch and what should be considered, will be presented in more detail in the text below.
Bark mulch and its use
The bark mulch is sometimes referred to as wood chopping and serves to suppress unwanted weeds. The use accordingly serves the simplified Beetpflege. But the bark mulch not only has functional properties. As a positive side effect, the decorative performance of this cover is considered. In order to be able to produce a special decoration effect, many offer a very special sort, which is also called Dekorinde. For example, the pine bark is increasingly used on graves, where it is used as a decorative cover. However, the pine bark is not suitable for large areas, since this is very high priced. In addition to the pine bark but also other varieties are offered, some of which can be classified as exotic. For which bark the user ultimately decides, however, is a matter of taste. Meanwhile, the demands made on the Dekorinde are so high that the manufacturers act flexibly and even color the chaff. These are then offered in a variety of colors and can be used in this way for individual decoration purposes.
What is bark mulch?
As the name suggests, the bark mulch is the outer part of a tree. During production, the bark of the tree is virtually peeled off, which is why only a very small proportion of wood is found in the product. Until a few years ago the Dekorinde was still considered a waste product, which was incurred in the wood industry. But now it is a matter of a functional and, above all, very popular substance, which has risen sharply due to the high demand. In addition to the bed cover, which is referred to as "mulching", the bark mulch also serves to generate energy by being used as fuel.
Bark mulch - definition
The term "mulch" states that it is an organic and uncrushed material that is applied by being "mulched". The crushed and unfermented tree bark is free of other additives. Although the bark mulch does not suppress the growth of unwanted weeds but makes it much more difficult, the product is particularly suitable for hard-to-reach areas in the garden and gardens. Especially corners can be particularly well protected against weeds with bark mulch. Another advantage of using bark mulch is defined by its protective function. This ensures that the soil does not dry out so quickly and therefore remains moist even on particularly hot days. In addition, microorganisms also increasingly settle on. These ensure that soil fertility is permanently increased.
Here you can mulch
The bark mulch is considered a substrate, which extracts nitrogen from the soil. For this reason you should mix the deco product with horn shavings and preferably use under fir trees. Of course, shrubs and hedges can also be mulched. With regard to vegetable and flower beds, however, the substrate should be dispensed with. In addition, the bark mulch is also used in terrarium, where it is used as an untreated soil substrate.
Bark mulch vs. woodchaff
And even if bark mulch is called Holzhäcksel, so it is here to differentiate. Wood chaffs consist of shredded branch wood and may possibly contain small bark parts. However, since this share is very low, Holzhäcksel is offered cheaper. But just as with the bark mulch, the demand for wood chaff has also risen sharply. In order to effectively control weed suppression, the following should be considered when using bark mulch:
- Layer thickness should be between 5 and 8 cm
- Material should have a certain thickness and must not be too fine
- Concentration of tannins should be increased appropriately
- Material should be mixed well (coarse and fine parts)
- It should be reached a maximum length of 6 cm
So that the weed-fighting effect does not lose its effect, the material should not be too fine. Under certain circumstances too fine material can also lead to undesirable soil sedimentation. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to an appropriate amount of coarse pieces, so that a long period of action can be achieved.
The decorative effect
So that the visual impression is not lost in addition to the functional properties, should be dispensed with the use of 10 to 15 cm long pieces. In this way, there are no restrictions with regard to the overall impression of the area. That's why many gardeners prefer to use the wood chaff. On the one hand, these are so coarse that sometimes whole branch pieces can be found in them and on the other hand, the material is cheaper to buy.
Nitrogen is indispensable
When the bark mulch is distributed on a surface for the first time, it is particularly important that nitrogen fertilization is additionally practiced. If the user renounces this preventive measure, it may happen that especially newly planted seedlings suffer from the so-called growth depression. Then it comes at this point to a nitrogen fixation. Since the mulch requires more nitrogen after the beginning of the implementation by the soil organisms, this is formally withdrawn from the soil. The consequence: The extracted nitrogen can no longer be available to the plants and it comes to short stature. In order to avoid this shortage, therefore, an extra nitrogen dose should be given before application. As an organic nitrogen donor horn shavings apply. For a rapid release of nitrogen, the horn shavings should have a fine structure. Once this addition of nitrogen has taken place, a cycle is created which involves the entire process. It comes to the death of microorganisms. The new generations, which are produced by the soil organisms, can draw from this the necessary nitrogen.
Tip: If several small plants have been placed in the garden in the garden, they can be covered with inverted buckets or flower pots during mulching. In this way, the small plantlets take no harm and can be mulched without hesitation. In order to optimally distribute the precious natural product, a broom is suitable. Here should be dispensed with the rake.
Worth knowing about decorating with bark mulch soon
Decorative bark mulch is versatile applicable. It comes in many colors, but natural tones work best. But if you like yellow or red bark, you will certainly find it. Green, brown and ocher, gray and black are the most used. Decorative bark mulch is ideal for color decoration and setting accents. It has the same properties as normal, undyed bark mulch. It is also used and applied equally. The colors fade but usually quite fast, even before the mulch is weathered.
- Which colors are used? - Of course, the best would be water colors with natural pigments, which are ecologically harmless. The manufacturers also consistently indicate that the colors are harmless. Often inorganic metal oxides are used as colorants. They are touted as ecologically harmless. Also the groundwater takes no damage. Colored mulch should not change the composition of the soil practically. One can only hope that this information is correct.
- Advantage over normal bark mulch? - The shelf life of the decorative bark mulch compared to normal bark mulch is significantly higher, about one third. Normal mulch takes about one to two years to rotting. Dyed mulch lasts about three years. The weathering process takes much longer for the surface-finished material. In addition, the decorative mulch is more resistant to algae formation and moss.
- Colored bark mulch useful? - About taste can not be argued and who likes it just colorful, for the colorful bark mulch is certainly useful. In any case, you can stand out clearly from its neighbors with a striking color. But then you should not bring many other colorful decorative items to it, which seems quickly overloaded and kills the eye of the beholder.
