Fighting bed bugs - all methods, means and costs: methods

Bedbugs are bloodsuckers. They are specialized in living close to us and biting us at night to get our blood. Attracted to the animals, which are also known as house bugs and belong to the family of flatbites, from the heat and the exhalations that are released while we sleep. Consequently, they can always be found near our sleeping places, in and around our beds. Hence the name. Your nocturnal bites can lead to unpleasant allergic reactions and inflammation. A fight is therefore essential.

Fighting bedbugs - a challenge

Anyone who has caught bed bugs in his apartment has a big problem. Getting rid of the little buggers is anything but easy. The universal solution does not exist. Grandma's home remedy definitely does not work either. That's why you can not afford to hire a professional pest controller. It takes a lot of knowledge about the way of life and the behavior of the animals to be able to kill them successfully and permanently. In addition, many animals no longer respond to certain insecticides. There has long since been a certain habituation effect. And because we are currently on the subject: Without the use of chemistry, bed bugs are usually not master. Even so, incidentally, it may be that the exterminator has to repeat his actions once or twice. However, all that does not mean that you could do nothing as a victim. The opposite is much more the case.

Recognize bed bugs

Before you can fight against bedbugs, you first have to find out if they are bed bugs or other parasites. The distinction is sometimes not so easy. The first signs of bed bug infestation are usually itchy, red spots on the body. They come from the bites of the bugs. Of course, other pests can cause this.
Tip: If there are bites or redness on the body in a more or less straight line, there is a high probability that you are dealing with bedbugs. Namely, the animals walk straight on the body surface and bite into the skin until they have found a fine blood vessel.
In addition to the bites on the body, there are a number of other clues that suggest a bed bug infestation. These include:
  • Inexplicable, very small Kotspuren (black or dark red spots) in the apartment and especially in the bedroom
  • Dead, cockroach-like animals and nymphs, especially under the bed
  • A disgusting, sweetish odor, which also spreads mainly in the bedroom
  • Bed bug eggs (about one millimeter long, transparent, creamy-white)
In addition, sooner or later you will come across live animals. These are very small, brown insects whose body is oval. As long as they have not sucked blood, they are relatively flat. After sucking, the body volume increases significantly and assumes a somewhat spherical shape. Among other things, bed bugs can be recognized by the fact that they travel very fast. Not only do they move horizontally, they also climb walls and cabinets effortlessly.

Tip: Adhesive tapes placed under and around the bed can help detect bed bug infestations. The animals stick to it and are thus easier to identify.

First measures

If you are sure that a bed bug infestation is present, you should take measures as soon as possible to limit the problem at least once. Wanting to exterminate the insects in the apartment itself is, as I said, a very difficult business. This is usually not the case without an exterminator. However, you can make your life significantly harder and thus prevent further spread. These measures include:
  • Thoroughly tidy up, in order to take possible hiding places for the animals in the flat
  • Thoroughly vacuum up to the smallest corner and edge to remove animals and their eggs. Afterwards, the vacuum cleaner has to be emptied immediately.
  • Wash all clothing in the closet at a minimum temperature of 50 degrees Celsius, even if it is clean. Store clothes in lockable plastic boxes or bags.
  • Treat mattresses, furniture, upholstery, carpets, curtains and cuddly toys with a steam cleaner (minimum temperature 65 degrees).
  • Seal holes and cracks in the walls as bedbugs use cavities for sleeping.
  • Move the bed away from the wall and attach a so-called bed bug barrier by smearing the legs of the bed with petroleum jelly or wrapping it with a double-sided adhesive tape.
  • Attach a bed bug protector to the mattress to prevent the animals from nesting in the mattress.

Actively combat population

To overcome the problems associated with bed bug infestation, the measures described above are not sufficient. They are only supportive and preventive. The bed bugs in the apartment can only be released if you actively combat them and eradicate the existing population. Background: A bed bug female lays around twelve eggs a day. In his fortunately short life, it comes to around 200 eggs. This means that the animals can multiply rapidly. If you do not fight them, the infestation will be steadily bigger. The fight must be aggressive and comprehensive. It is not only about hatched or adult animals, but also about their eggs. It does not work without chemical aids such as insecticides or pesticides.
In the specialized trade (hardware store, garden center) there are bedbug or vermin sprays for the price between seven and 15 euros, with which bed bugs and their eggs can be killed. The pests, however, you can only go with it, if you really every conceivable nesting and sleeping space reached with it. This is hardly possible for a layman. In any case, it is definitely not enough just to spray live animals that somehow cross each other's path. In addition, depending on the composition in closed rooms, these agents can cause health problems. Biological pesticides usually do not destroy a bed bug population, but merely drive the animals away - usually from one room to another. You should always be aware of bedbug control that bedbugs are true survivors and that it does not depend on individual animals.
Diatomaceous earth may be an alternative to sprays. The powder destroys the bugs of bed bugs, they dry up and die. It needs to be sprinkled into every conceivable hideout, as well as the paths the insects usually take. That alone makes it clear where the problems are. Diatomaceous earth works and is also environmentally friendly, but it can hardly destroy a whole population. In addition, diatomaceous earth should not be inhaled by humans or pets, as this could lead to respiratory diseases.

Professional pest control

Bedbugs bite

Although some may not like it - usually and especially with a stronger infestation helps only a professional pest control. So you can not get around the exterminator. He will usually use a so-called combination method. Different chemical control agents are combined, for example, with heat or steam. The goal is always to permanently eradicate the entire population of bed bugs in the home, so eggs, nymphs and adult animals. This may require several appointments. How exactly a pest controller operates differs from provider to provider. The costs depend on the one hand on the chosen methods and on the other hand on the effort.
For example, it also plays a role in how strong the infestation is or how many affected areas it is. A few hundred euros can come together quickly. This hurts, but leads in the vast majority of cases to a reasonable solution. And that can only mean getting rid of the unwelcome intruders in bed and in your home permanently, sustainably and safely. No sensible person wants to live together with such nasty bloodsuckers.
