Planting and nurturing the blue-seeded shrub - That's how it's done

The Content Of The Article:

Whether Blue Cucumber or Decaisnea called fargesii: the Blue-Crayfish Shrub is an Asian ornamental shrub with aromatic-tasting fruits. Read here how it is grown.

Blue notes taste very sweet

The blue-red shrub, also often referred to as "bluegurke" in the garden trade, convinces its lovers in two ways. On the one hand the blue-ray shrub is an ornamental shrub with an exotic character, on the other hand it bears blue, pod-like fruits in late summer, which are very popular in Asia to be consumed as fruit. The approximately 15 to 20 centimeters long, very sweet-tasting fruits are suitable for snacking directly from the shrub or for the effective decoration of all sorts of sweets.

But before you can taste these delicious pods, of course, you must first plant the blue-seeded shrub. How exactly this is done and how it looks with the care of the blue-red shrub, we have listed here for you once.

Cultivation of the blue-eared shrub

➤ Cultivation from seed

The gardening trade offers blue notes in different growth stages, which you can easily plant in the garden. On the other hand, however, you can also use the plant yourself by sowing seeds (blue-seed seeds are available here, for example). The sowing of the seed can take place year-round in plant pots.

And this is how it's done:

Before sowing, it is best to allow the seed to germinate for one day in a glass of water. Afterwards, you have to press the germinated seed about one centimeter deep into potting soil. Then it is time to wait until the first shoot has formed. Please do not despair, because that can take a while.

The conditionally hardy wood can then be planted all year round in the garden, but you should keep away from particularly frosty and especially hot plant days.

➤ Siting the blue-red shrub

The blue-pot shrub, which is up to four meters high and usually just as wide, should be used in a sunny to moderately partially shaded spot in the garden. Furthermore, the blue note clearly prefers lean, well-drained soils. Especially nutrient-rich and especially heavy clay soil is less recommended for this plant.

The blue cucumber can also be easily held in a suitably sized bucket. But then you have to water the plant regularly. In addition, the plant in the tub vessel usually also requires some long-term fertilizer.

➤ Fertilize:

Every year from May to June, the blue-red shrub produces yellow, bell-shaped flowers, which form a kind of flower grape. However, before the flowering opens, you should apply organic fertilizer to the shrub by, for example, carefully working in compost around the plant.

As soon as the leaves change from bright yellow to yellow-orange in autumn, a second organic fertilizer should be applied.

➤ Harvesting / wintering of the plant:

After flowering, the beautiful blue notes also form, which you should reap and eat only with a deep blue color. However, the fruits can remain in the bush until winter, which will make them a special visual highlight in your garden.

In the first years and in particularly frost-intensive areas, you should still protect your blue-seed shrub in winter, for example, by accumulating the trunk with soil or by covering it with a garden fleece.

➤ Perform a shape cut:

Furthermore you can give the blue-eared shrub a special shape every year if required. But you should do this only after a complete defoliation of the plant or in early spring.

Now, if you have decided on a shape cut, then you should simply cut the branches over the first or second bud.
