Maintain the bob - tips for watering, cutting and fertilizing

The Content Of The Article:

The bubble-head is so popular among other things, because it is an unpretentious houseplant. However, a few instructions for care are still to be observed.

The bubble-head is one of the most popular indoor plants. Not infrequently, the plants have the shape of the hip hairstyle from the 1920s. Arranged in traffic lights or planters, the thin leaf veins also grow downwards decoratively. Likewise, the bob head can be used very well as a groundcover, in climatically favorable areas even year-round outdoors.

What should be considered in the care of this fairly undemanding beginner plant anyway, you can read here.

How did the bobblehead get its name and where did it come from?

The hobby gardener can only create ideal conditions for his plants if he knows their origin and history. The natural home of the Bubiköpfchens lies in the Mediterranean. Primarily on Majorca, Elba or Corsica, the plant is to Haue. The plants are therefore adapted to the subtropical climate with warm, low precipitation summers and mild, wet winters. Bubble heads prefer to grow on rocks or under trees. Even in wall joints or between the tread plates of undemanding bobbed head is often found.

Its name (Helxine soleirolii) owes the Bubiköpfchen Joseph Francois Soleirol. The botanist collected the plant in Corsica in the 19th century and described it in detail.

Pour the bob head properly

The bob head needs a constant humidity throughout the year. This is rather rare with indoor plants. Many representatives are watered only sporadically in winter. For cacti, for example, casting is completely stopped. If enough should always be poured, it should not come to waterlogging, because this is the biggest enemy of the plant. It is therefore always necessary to remove excess water from the planter or the saucer.

➔ Tip: Waterlogging is dangerous for the plant, especially when it is cooler. The consequence is not rare root rot.

Very important in the irrigation of the Bubiköpfchens is not to water the plant from above. The bob head should always be poured from below. The water is thus filled directly into the planter or saucer. Commercially special coasters are available. These have a wick, which can be pressed into the planter and thus facilitates water absorption.

➔ Attention: Stagnant water should be removed from the coasters and planters at the latest after half an hour. Then the plant has been sufficiently supplied with liquid and waterlogging can be avoided.

The bob head pour in key words:

  • Constant moisture requirement throughout the year
  • Plant must not dry out
  • Allow substrate to dry slightly
  • always pour from below
  • Avoid waterlogging

Feed the bobbed head properly

The nutrient requirement of the bob head is classified as quite low. Fertilization with conventional liquid fertilizers for green plants can contribute to healthy plant growth, but should only be done in moderation. It is fertilized exclusively in the months of October to March.

➔ Attention: The fertilizer solution must not touch the leaves of the bob head. This could cause burns on the foliage.

In order to avoid contact with the above-ground parts of plants when applying the fertilizer solution, the fertilizer can be added directly to the irrigation water. If you fertilize your plants from above, you should shower the bob head briefly with water after fertilization and allow the leaves to dry well.

The bob head fertilize in keywords:

  • moderate nutritional needs
  • Use liquid fertilizer for green plants
  • Fertilize only between autumn and spring
  • Leaves must not come in contact with the fertilizer

Does the bob head have to be a hairdresser?

It all depends on whether the bob head should retain its natural shape or grow lushly. The plants grow quite fast and by shortening the shoots can get a bushy shape, or work out.

➔ Tip: Traffic lights need not be cut.

It can be differentiated between care and shape cut. In order to preserve the naturally spherical growth, you must regularly cut the plant into shape. It can be used to a conventional household scissors. If you want to prove creativity in the shape cutting, you can also dare to square cuts or turn the bob head into a heart.

A care cut is necessary if the plants grow too dense. This can be seen in the fact that the shoots begin to wilt in the middle of the plant. If individual shoots have shot out particularly long without sufficient leaves to develop, they are also removed. It is to be considered a change of location, because the plant was probably too dark.

Which varieties of Bubiköpfchen are there?

There are no different types of bob head in the conventional sense. All plants belong to the genus Soleirolia soleirolii. However, some breeding forms have come on the market, whose leaf coloration differs:

✿ Aladatase - The leaves have fresh spring green.
✿ Argentea - The leaves are covered by a silvery veil.
✿ Aurea - In this breed, some gold mixes under the leaf green.

Is the bobbed flower blooming?

Although it is rare in breeding forms, it is not excluded that the bob head produces flowers with good care. The flowers are quite inconspicuous. At each peduncle only one pair of flowers can develop. You have to look carefully to see the approximately pinhead sized white flowers.

It also fruits are formed. These are called Achäne and represent a special form of the nuts dar. The brownish minifruit reached, however, only a diameter of 0.5 centimeters and can be seen only with practiced eye in the dense foliage.

Detect pests and diseases on the bob head

These are very robust plants. Therefore, the occurrence of diseases is rare. Also pest infestation is as well as excluded. Endangered are the Bubiköpfchen alone due to incorrect care.

waterlogging

The most common problem and at the same time the most frequent care mistake is waterlogging. Incorrect casting will attack the leaves and begin to deteriorate. The tender leaves should not be wetted permanently with water. It is therefore wrong to pour the plant from above or even spray it. The bobblehead thrives only when it is poured from below and stagnant water is regularly removed from the planters. Waterlogging leads to root rot and the plant is usually beyond saving.

Wrong location

Even by a wrong choice of location, the plant can ail. The Bubiköpfchen tolerate temperature fluctuations very well, but tolerate no blazing sun. Especially the midday sun at the flower festival can cause the leaves to burn down. In general, a location directly above the heater for the plant is not optimal.

Weakened plants can occasionally be attacked by aphids. Aphids can be gently removed by treating the plant with greasy soap solution or by washing with lukewarm water.

➔ Tip: The leaves must then be dried well, as the plant can not tolerate wet leaves.
