Camellia Winter - Camellias (Camellia japonica): camellia

With its bushy growth, shiny dark green foliage and lush flowers, camellia is a particularly attractive addition to the balcony, patio and garden. The camellia is considered difficult - wrongly. The originating from East Asia and the family of the tea plant family (Theaceae) beauty is undemanding and flourishes untiringly for many months - often until the onset of winter. The camellias prefer the cold winter to a stay in the heated house.

Winter time - Camellias can stand the cold

Many of the camellia varieties can be planted in the garden and can spend the winter there:
  • When buying, make sure that the camellia is classified as "hardy".
  • Especially wintermild regions are the German west and northwest, which are protected by the Atlantic weather conditions.
  • Southern Switzerland and areas of the Upper Rhine are also suitable for free-range camellias.
  • Before camellias are planted, they should already have reached a certain strength (age), because young plants are particularly vulnerable in winter.
A planted camellia can - if not well grown and rooted - spend the winter in the sheltered pot. Well-rooted potted plants tolerate about minus 5 degrees Celsius, and the camellias planted with winter protection tolerate about 15 degrees Celsius. Heated interiors without temperature changes and natural light tolerate the camellia only limited.

Well protected - the camellia in the winter garden

If the soil freezes, the plant may die of thirst. The suitable winter location for the tub camellia is a place without winter sun. There the plant can "rest" and is not stimulated to grow. If the ground freezes, it can be poured - with a few centimeters distance from the trunk - with hot water, which cools quickly when penetrating into the ground. Exposed camellias can be covered with a thick layer of mulch and, if the camellia is sparse, completely covered with a special protective fleece or with a translucent bubble wrap.
If the plant is wrapped, the protection should be removed occasionally to check for pests or decay. Caution is advised when the first rays of spring already show up and the plant is taken out of its winter shelter; in late frost new shoots die off immediately.

Camellias - wild and tamed

The Chinese Camellia (Camellia sinensis) is like her wild sister, the Japanese Camellia japonica native to East Asia. Most of the camellias are cultivated in pots and spend the frost-free time in partial shade. Camellias are a grateful, bushy plant that attract attention with dark green, glossy foliage and thrill even in low light conditions with their countless large flowers. Most of them are still blooming when other flowering plants have already gone into well-deserved hibernation.

Happy outdoors - Kübelkamelien in winter

Even winter hardy camelias spend the winter outdoors, but they also need winter protection. It is recommended to protect the pot on a stable and thick Styrofoam pad from ground frost. The pot is wrapped with fleece or bubble wrap, the case can be additionally filled with Styrofoam pieces. Trunk and soil can also be protected with a layer of mulch. In their winter quarters, the container plant must be examined regularly for pest infestation and frost damage.

Camellias - uncomplicated and flowering

A sheltered and partially shaded place is ideal for camellias. Even camellias are not allowed to stand in the water. A well-moistened root ball, without waterlogging, which is poured with lime-free water (rainwater), ensures undisturbed growth. The water requirement of the plant increases with increasing solar radiation. Tap water usually contains too much lime and should be filtered or treated (if necessary chemically) before use. It is fertilized with a nitrogenous fertilizer (higher ratio of nitrogen to phosphorus).

The rhododendron fertilizer is also suitable for camellias, but only half of the recommended amount of fertilizer should be expected of the salt-sensitive camellias. From October, no more fertilizer is used and less watered to set the plant to the rest period. When planting or repotting a rhododendron substrate is well suited, because the low-limb soil and its low pH value get well for the camellia.

Worth knowing about the wintering of camellias soon

The camellia is a long-lived, evergreen shrub that can reach heights of growth of 1.5 to 6 meters. In winter-mild regions it can overwinter in the open air. However, it is important to ensure that the location is not too sunny. This could dry out the camellia at minus temperatures. In addition, it would be exposed to large variations in temperature from day to night.
Outside: Provide frost and wind protection
  • The roots should be slightly humid and not dry out. To protect the camellia from too much frost, it should be packed thick with leaves.

  • Camellias also love sheltered places. Anyone who would like to hibernate outside as a container plant should also place it on a small pedestal, eg. B. made of wood. So it is somewhat protected from the cold. In a harsher climate you should prefer to hibernate the camellia indoors.

  • Temperatures from 3 degrees Celsius to 5 degrees Celsius are ideal.

  • By no means should it be warmer than 12 degrees Celsius at the place where the camellia winters. In the absence of camellia in the long run the nightly, cool temperatures, she enters. This would be z. B. in the bedroom or living room of the case where it is exposed to a constant, warmer air.

  • Temperatures above 15 degrees Celsius are dangerous for the camellia in winter. It would shed leaves and flowers and take a lot of damage.

Inside: Keep cool and bright
  • It is best to overwinter camellias in a cool, bright place and pour them moderately. If the camellia is brought outside again in the spring, it does not need to be repotted.
  • Even a cut is not necessary. But at the latest, if roots are seen on the earth's surface, you should treat her to a larger pot.
  • To avoid waterlogging, it is advisable to put a potsherd in the pot. As soil suitable rhododendron earth, which is enriched with quartz sand.

Camellias and their care at a glance

  • Partial shade, sheltered from the wind
  • Winter protection required (temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius, outdoor up to -5 degrees Celsius)
  • low-lime irrigation water (rainwater)
  • Nitrogen fertilizer, pay attention to salinisation (rhododendron fertilizer, 1/2 fertilizer amount)
  • Low-lime soil, low pH (rhododendron substrate)
