Dried carrots are a delicious specialty instead of chips, gummy bears & more. Unfortunately, they are very expensive in trade, which is why you can easily dry the carrots yourself. We have presented 3 variants here once.

Carrots dry

Vegetables and fruits can be preserved in a variety of ways. One of them is drying or drying, for which you do not even need a special device. Early on, people dried vegetables, in warm climes, you just need a few warm summer days with plenty of sun. But the oven is also great for drying.

In any case, it is important that you only use flawless vegetables for drying. Since carrots are very hard, you should blanch them briefly before drying, then drying takes less time.

Of course, dried carrots do not contain as many vitamins as raw carrots, because they are low in acidity, but most of them are lost during drying. Do not peel the carrots before drying, because most of the vitamins are just below the shell.

Drying in the air

The oldest and simplest way to dehydrate vegetables and fruits is to dry in the fresh air. All you need is an airy and warm space, which could be a sheltered spot in the garden or an attic, for example.

You can slice the carrots and then string them on strings. Alternative is the stringing of wooden frames with light fabric or gauze, then the vegetable slices can then be spread out.

" Tip: If you want to dry the carrots outdoors, use a gauze to protect them from insects to prevent contamination. Drying in the sun takes about three to four days.

The drying in the oven

Of course, you can also use the oven to dry or dare carrots. To do this, spread baking paper on the wire shelf or a baking tray and place the vegetable slices on top.

The oven is set to circulating air and a maximum of 70 degrees. Since moisture must escape during the drying process, the oven door should be left ajar. For example, you can clamp a wooden spoon between them.

The process of drying can take a few hours, so it can take up to 12 hours. Check again and again whether the carrots are already completely dry or if they can still be compressed.

Drying in the dehydrator

The purchase of a dehydrator is certainly worthwhile only if you regularly want to conserve fruit and vegetables in this way.

In the electrical device fit several baskets that you can stack on top of each other after filling. You can then set the temperature individually according to the manufacturer's specifications. The duration of the process depends on the water content of the carrots, their thickness, size and humidity. The process is over when no more juice comes out of the vegetable slices and they have a leathery consistency.
