If you love lingonberries, you should consider getting these tasty berries in the garden. They are acidic in taste, which is why not everyone likes the raw fruits. Processed into jelly, marmalade and compote or placed in a cake, the small berries are a true bladder explosion. It is worthwhile to grow cranberries in the garden.

Worth knowing about cranberries

The cranberry belongs to the genus of blueberry plants and is evergreen. As the shrubs only grow between 10 and 40 centimeters high, they are ideally suited for planting tall trees. From May to June, they form small, bell-shaped flowers. Later, the red, sour fruits are formed.

The fruits are usually not eaten raw, but cooked. They do not only convince with their taste. They are also very healthy because they are full of vitamins. In addition, they should have a healing effect. Cranberries should e.g. lower cholesterol, anti-inflammatory and protect against cancer.

So plant cranberries properly

Planting time:

Cranberries are always planted in autumn. September or October are the best months for it. Anyone who is afraid that the plants will not survive the winter, but can put them in the early spring in the ground, if there is no great risk of frost.


Cranberry plants like sunny to partially shaded places in the garden, which have a moist and slightly acidic soil. The pH should be between 5 and 6. This is a prerequisite for successful cultivation. So you should first test the pH of the soil. If it is too high, then just add some peat or peat soil in the soil.


Cranberry bushes can be solitary, but also grow under rhododendrons, azaleas or blueberry bushes. In the bed they should be best in rows. Pay attention to a planting distance of about 40 centimeters. Each plant hole should be twice as large as the root ball. In addition, it is advisable to create a drainage of gravel or potsherds in order to prevent waterlogging. Have you planted the shrubs, then neatly sprinkle and you're done.


In the first two years, the cranberry shrubs still bear no fruits. But from the third year - and twice. The first harvest is in June / July. The falls but usually a little smaller. The main harvest is then scheduled for the months of September and October.

Maintain cranberry bushes properly

To water:

Cranberries actually do not have a high water requirement. Nevertheless, the soil must never completely dry out. Therefore, it is advisable to mulch the cranberry bushes.

Remember to water the bushes in the fall as well. Then, when other plants no longer need so much water, the cranberries still need it.


As far as fertilizing is concerned, you do not have to spend a lot of time on cranberries. It is sufficient if you supply the shrubs once a year with horn meal and compost.


After flowering, it is advisable to light up the cranberry bushes a bit. This allows the sun to reach all parts of the shrub and make the berries turn red. Otherwise, no pruning is necessary with the cranberries.


In winter you do not have to be afraid that your cranberry shrubs will not survive the cold temperatures. They are finally hardy to -20 degrees Celsius. If it really gets colder in the winter, then just protect the shrubs with a little brushwood.
