The cranberry is related to the blueberry and therefore also belongs to the heather plants, which need an acid soil to flourish well and produce many fruits. But once the soil is well prepared, these plants are extremely easy to care for.
Grow cranberries yourself
Unwillingness is the desire to bring this plant in their own garden, so as to harvest the popular fruits themselves directly. But what do you have to pay attention to when growing?
- Fortunately, the plants are very resistant to winter cold: even temperatures down to -22° C can be tolerated at times.
- Even if it has expelled, you do not harm a short-term frost phase of up to -3° C.
- In summer, however, it is even quite resistant to drought. However, you should never let it dry out completely!
- Cranberries are insensitive to pests, but in many cases fungal diseases were discovered again and again, which should then be treated with a suitable remedy.
- But beware! Against weed killer cranberry plants are extremely sensitive. Therefore, it is better to simply remove the surrounding weeds by hand.
It is best to plant them in rows and leave a distance of about 30 cm between the individual plants. The dwarf shrubs are not very high, by the way: they reach between 10 and 30 cm when they are fully grown. The shrubs are among the evergreen plants.
- When choosing the location, it is important that the soil is not too acidic. The ph value should be between 5 and 6.
- In addition, the plants thrive best when the location is in partial shade.
- The harvest is then in August or September.
- By the way, a slight pruning is recommended after flowering.

When multiplying by lowering a single shoot of a plant is slightly scratched with a knife, bent into the ground, fixed there and covered with soil. It forms its own roots and can be separated from the mother plant and transplanted after about half a year. The best time to pull a new plant out of a sump is autumn, so the socker can be separated the following spring.
Close relatives of the cranberry is the currently more and more popular cranberry, which, however, is a cultivated cranberry. Cranberries are a bit smaller than cranberries. Both varieties are very healthy, as they contain a variety of vitamins: Vitamin C, B, A and the berries are also said to have other healing properties: they should be anti-inflammatory and protect against cancer and skin aging and even lower cholesterol. They should even help against various types of bladder disease.
They are popular as a side dish to hearty dishes such as classic game, they are used as fruit for the cake or processed into compote or jam. Incidentally, cranberries can not be eaten raw; they are too herbic and too sour.
