Cleaning and maintaining larch decking - How to do it right

The Content Of The Article:

When you properly clean and care for larch decking, you not only create a beautiful look, you also extend the life of the planks.

Decking has to endure a lot

Larch is a popular material for flooring on the patio. The wood comes from native or Siberian cultivation, where Siberian larch is harder. With proper laying and regular care, however, you have made a good choice with both larch species. Properly cared for, the wood, with its yellowish brown to reddish brown coloring, ensures a warm ambience.

Provide already when laying

On the terrace, the wood has to endure a lot, because it is exposed to all weather. Sun, rain, ice and snow finally hit the plank floor without restriction. The changing weather can lead to the graying of the larch wood. The real risk lies in the construction. When larch comes into contact with soil, the wood can quickly rot. A well ventilated substructure without direct contact to the ground protects against it.

Minimal joints between the individual floorboards and a gap between the house wall and the terrace ensure a rapid drainage of rainwater. This is how the decking boards dry faster. Also pay attention to a high-quality processing of the plank boards. The wood should be as free as possible and glazed, otherwise there is a risk of splintering. Whether you prefer smooth or corrugated planks is a matter of taste. However, smooth planks are easier to clean and maintain. Corrugated planks are non-slip when wet.

Clean larch decking

Everyday dirt is best removed with a broom, a scrubber or a hard brush and clear water. Especially at the beginning of the season often a thorough cleaning is due. Careful cleaning is especially important in the interstices or with corrugated planks. Remove attached moss as it affects the life of the planks.

Persistent dirt and moss can also be removed with a high-pressure cleaner. But beware! Use the weakest step or hire a specialist to ensure that the boards are not damaged.

Maintain larch decking

The care preserves the beauty of the wooden floor and extends the life span. Larch develops over time a gray haze, which does not harm the wood, but not just everyone likes. Applying a hard wax oil or terracotta oil (available here, for example) once a year prevents the graying and strengthening of the wood against moisture. The natural light or reddish color is retained. If the gray haze has already struck, you can use a special degumming agent (available here, for example).

Thoroughly clean the floor before oiling and let it dry well. Best for a few days. Sealed or varnished planks must also be sanded before oiling. Then apply the oil thinly with a rag on the wood. After a few minutes you have to wipe off the excess oil again. After 24 hours, you can re-enter the patio and set up furniture.
