Fight diatoms in the aquarium - in 5 steps

The problem is often solved by itself, namely, when the silicate is consumed. Since new silicate is always supplied by fresh water, so it can also give time and again problems with these algae.

Recognize diatoms

Diatoms can be recognized on a brownish, greasy surface on the ground, on objects, on the windows and especially on plants. This coating is often interspersed with oxygen bubbles. Because of the brown color, diatoms are sometimes called brown algae, but this is not correct. Diatoms form a silicate housing. For this they need silica.
In order to succeed against diatoms, some steps are necessary. First, the causes of the infestation must be found, because the fight depends on where it comes from. The causes must be turned off.

Find out causes for diatoms

Diatoms often occur in newly established aquariums. This is because the bacterial cultures have not developed sufficiently and the new plants are not really growing. Another criterion for occurrence is light. Diatoms do not like it so bright, they prefer the shade of plants and rather poorly lit pools.
The main reason for their growth, however, is an oversupply of nutrients in the water. Silica is present especially in fresh water. Over time, this is converted to SiO2. This can no longer be used by the algae. So it can be explained that the algae disappear after some time by itself. In new aquariums this process takes longer, in older aquariums it happens faster. This is also the reason why the new entry of silicic acid during water change is hardly significant.
Also, a high phosphate value plays a major role in the spread of diatoms. Almost all algae like phosphate, because the diatom is no exception. If there is too much phosphate in the water, diatoms also form in retracted aquariums. Sparse plant growth and quite hard water are also triggers.
  • Test water values - take action against violations
  • Check lighting, possibly too little light available, give more light
  • Check care measures, if necessary carry out a cleaning

Fight diatoms

There are different ways to kill the diatoms. One is often not enough. It is usually the sum of measures. Of course, the conditions must be changed so that the algae can no longer find food.

Manual removal

From smooth surfaces, diatoms can be easily wiped off. Whether slices, objects or plants, wiping is enough. For the discs is an aquarium blade. At the bottom it gets more complicated. Here, the algae should be sucked off, just with a hose, just when changing water. The affected layers can also be washed out, but that's complicated and time-consuming.

After cleaning, the water should be replaced to a large extent to remove the floating in the water residues and algae parts from the aquarium.

Lower silicic acid values

Who sets up a new aquarium, the tap water should not use pure. It is better to mix it with osmosis water. Osmosis water is produced when tap water is forced through a membrane under high pressure. It is an intensive filtering process in which the water is removed from all components, including the minerals. To produce osmosis water, a filter or a filter system is needed. Whether it's worth it just to "cleanse" the water in the aquarium, everyone has to decide for themselves. However, these filters are now available in many homes.
Anyone who already owns an aquarium and where the water is also free of siliceous algae can remove this water and put it in the new basin. It is then mixed with normal tap water. This accelerates the retraction of the new aquarium, because the silica can convert faster. The algae are deprived of food.
  • Water change from 25 to 50 percent

Lower phosphate content

Algae usually occur only from a phosphate content of 0.25 mg per liter of water. Sometimes such high values occur in drinking water. Then osmosis water is really a good choice, at least for the aquarium. If it is not the fresh water that provides high levels, the reason must be found out. There are different causes. Often there are just too many fish in the tank. These provide by their faeces for high values. In addition, it is often fed too much. Food is nutritious. It sinks to the ground and decomposes over time. This releases the nutrients. Fast growing plants help to lower the values. They should be abundant in the aquarium.
If it is not enough to reduce the fish population and the amount of food, to use plants and to increase the illuminance, phosphate binders can help. The are offered in large numbers in the trade. It is important to follow the dosing instructions and choose the most natural way possible.
  • Exchange water, 25 to 50 percent
  • Check fish stocks, if necessary remove fish
  • Check the amount of feed. What the fish did not eat within 10 minutes is too much. Therefore, feed less
  • Use fast-growing aquatic plants

prevention

Algae with frog

There are many things that can be done to prevent it, from selecting the most favorable location, selecting a few inhabitants, using a number of suitable plants, operating a suitable filter, ideal lighting, regular water changes, frequent water checks and cleaning. Mouth-sucking fish are e.g. diligent helpers in the diatom control.
  • Location not too dark, but not in the sun, that promotes other algae

  • Fish stock - not too many fish or other inhabitants. Lots of fish - a lot of feces. There are also special types of fish that bring their feces especially many nutrients into the water. Specialist shops can certainly help.

  • Planting - the more plants, the more nutrients are used for growth. These are no longer available to the algae.

  • Filter - appropriate filters clean the aquarium water

  • Lighting - try a bit brighter light, but not more than 10 to 12 hours, otherwise other species of algae will be promoted

  • Water change - in normal operation, a water change every two to three weeks. Occur algae, take weekly water and feed new. Think about an osmosis filter.

  • Check water values - not just in an emergency, but regularly. Deviations are noticed in time and you can take countermeasures

  • Cleaning - also clean with every change of water

Conclusion
In newly created aquariums it comes after a short time often to a diatom attack. That is not worrisome. On the other hand, you do not have to intervene. After a few weeks, that is when the diatoms have consumed the silicate and die without food. It is true that new silicate is added when the water is changed, but once the pool has settled in, this is no longer a problem. If there is an increased diatom attack during operation, it must be checked why this happens. Often it is too little light. This defect can be easily turned off. Somewhat more complicated is when a nutrient over supply occurs. Then the conditions have to be changed so that they are reduced.
