Materials and preparation of curb installationKeep in mind that to lay curbs yourself, you have enough space for your work and for storing the materials. In case of emergency, clear some space or clarify with your neighbor if you can use the public area of the walkway. In any case, make sure not to obstruct the traffic of the cars or pedestrians. Remember: good planning in advance will make your work easier and smoother later on. First, make a list for the materials you need. Only when you have determined quantity, you can get the materials and aids.
- patch hammer
- patch cord
- plaster iron
- Tray for stirring the concrete
- Curb made of granite, concrete or natural stone
- Antifreeze gravel
- Paving concrete C25 / 30
Preparation of the actual paving work
Lay down foil or tarpaulins on lawns or pavements that you want to protect, so you can easily remove the excavated soil and pavement later.
First, you should dig out a ditch, a so-called planie, at the point where the curbs are to be later. This should be about one third of the later curb height or 15 to 20 cm below the lower edge of the curb. This plan should be as straight as possible. The best way to compact this plan is with the vibrating plate.
Now fill in approx. 15 cm antifreeze gravel to avoid later frost damage such as cracking. This layer is also compacted again with the vibrating plate.
Now hit the paving iron in the line or the escape of the later curbs.
Between the paving iron, the paving line is stretched. This should have the height which should later also have the upper edge of the curbs. This work is one of the most important, because a crooked pavement can later lead to crooked curbs. Check the course and the height twice.
Lay curbs expertly
Now bring the paving concrete to the beginning of the planie and along the paving line. When doing so, fill in the concrete slightly higher so that the curb is well inserted in the concrete bedding.
Now you can put the first curb in the heaped concrete. Align the curb well and tap it with the paving hammer so that it is firmly in the concrete bed.
Form the concrete bedding in front of and behind the curb into a wedge that you press down with the shovel and smooth. Although this area is later under the ground and is invisible, but helps, for example, later paving to lighter work.
Now continue in this way with the remaining stones. Do not forget to check the distances, the height and the location again and again. Matching with the paving line is a good help here. Now you can make corrections.
If large gaps between the curbs or natural stone was used, the joints should be filled with mortar.
Cost of self-laying curbsPaving concrete and gravel is already starting from a few euros to get the bag. Stones, on the other hand, can have a large price range. From one euro or less the piece of simple concrete curb up to 15 euros the piece of natural stone is all possible. Therefore, it is precisely when using expensive natural stone necessary to determine the exact consumption of material. Nevertheless, buy a few more stones if they have measured themselves or perhaps need to cut one.
Sources of error, maintenance and careBe sure to compact the excavated trench, especially if you are laying on sandy soil. Otherwise, even years later, when the ground lowers, the curbs may tip over or break the joints. Many lay people do without the inserted gravel, which is a big mistake. Especially this gravel prevents, when it is well compacted with the vibrating plate, the tilting or lowering of the curbs.
If you pay attention to these things, you will enjoy many years, if not decades, of your self-made curbs.
Care or maintenance does not really need this small structure. If weed grows between the curbs, you can simply rip it out or remove it with Weed Ex. Just a curb prevents weeds from spreading from one surface to another, for example from grass to a bed. Thus, a set curb is not only a decorative but also a very useful building in your garden or front yard.
Worth knowing about the laying of curbs in the near futureIf you have some manual skills, you can lay your own stones, save the craftsman and money, and later look proudly at the work of your own hands. Expert and prudent you will enjoy many years or even decades on your curbs. Here again the most important work steps at a glance:
With the spirit level, a straight line is staked using wooden sticks. These wooden sticks are now a string that serves as a guideline for the straight line and also for the height. Therefore, it is important that the cord also has the same height in all places.
Along the guide line, a trench is now dug, which is about a spade wide and about 20 cm deep.Bis half of this trench is then filled with a semi-moist concrete and set the curbs along the string.
Bring the curbs to the correct height with a rubber mallet. With it you can easily hammer on the edge stones, without this being damaged.
If the height is fixed, the curbs are filled with concrete on both sides. That's how they hold their bombs for many years.
As an alternative to setting in concrete, the stones can also be anchored in a gravel bed. For this, the trench bottom is filled with a finger-deep layer of gravel. The curbs are placed on it, adjusted in height and direction and finally well embedded in fine gravel. This must be carefully compacted, which in turn can be used the rubber hammer. Of course you should not bring the stones back from their fixed orientation.
Curbs in the garden designClear lines in the garden, that's what most garden owners want. But it is always important that the overall picture is correct. Paths, beds, lawns and seats must harmonize. The curb stones also contribute to the perfect picture. But you should also think about practical things. Driveways to the house, the garage and the like must have a high stability. Garden paths are not so compact. This is more about optics. For driveways and the like offer concrete edge stones, for natural stones make way better. They often have a natural pattern. This relaxes the garden paths. Curbs are a real design element in the garden. Usually it looks more natural, if not everything is so perfect, so a stone out a little higher, one is lower. Too much perfection is often cold.
Curbs also contribute to the overall impression of the garden. Although they certainly set no highlights, but they provide with harmony. There are many different curbs. When choosing you should take your time. A specialist consultation can also be useful. It is important that a natural impression arises. The matching stones and a good laying technique contribute a lot to make the garden feel natural and inviting.
