A distinction is made primarily between a trellis fruit hedge and / or a berry hedge. The berry hedge is usually lower in growth than the trellis fruit hedge. Both variants and tips for the care of your fruit hedge presented here once.

┬╗Trellis fruit hedge

The advantage of trellises is that they do not grow so tall (they should not be more than 2 meters in height) like traditional trees, making the fruit harvest much more pleasant.

For a trellis fruit hedge you can use countless pome fruit varieties, such as Apples, pears, cherries and plums. You can achieve an exotic fruit mix by planting kiwis, peaches, mirabelles or apricots.

Use only hardy plants when planting fruit trees. Whereby you can easily make a fruit hedge with only one type of fruit or even a colorful mixture of mutually compatible varieties.

However, when planting the trellis fruit or the trellis orchard you must take into account that the fruit trees grow along trellis fences, which you must set up in advance. These should be best around fence posts, which you cross horizontally with Zaundr├Ąhten, along which later the fruit branches can branch comfortably.

For a bushy berry hedge you can plant redcurrants with red, black and white fruits. But also blueberries, gooseberries, Jostabeeren and the like more suitable for a berry hedge. Not to be forgotten in this context are also sea buckthorn and rosehips!

However, if you want to grow a berry hedge that is as tall as possible, raspberries, mulberries and blackberries are a good option, but you should consider using a climbing aid - e. G. by pulling wires, similar to the espalier fruit. Incidentally, the grape is also suitable for a seasonally opaque but very tall fence planting.

Care of a fruit hedge

The care required for a fruit hedge is relatively low. Only in spring and autumn, you should provide the hedge with sufficient organic fertilizer (compost). Alternatively, you can of course also use a full fertilizer available in the garden trade or a special berry fertilizer.

And trellises, of course, lose their foliage in the fall, so you can easily collapse around the fruit stems so that it rots there. That has an additional fertilizing effect.

You should regularly inspect fruit hedges (during the season approximately every 2 to 3 weeks) for pest infestation, so that you can always treat them quickly and that they do not spread to other types of fruit. But you should also check your hedges regularly for diseases on berry fruit and trellises.

┬╗Pruning / shape cutting:

Of course, every year you have to make appropriate cuts or cuts on the hedges, which vary according to the type of fruit.
