Mushroom Rungia klossii

Rungia klossii is a plant with an amazing mushroom flavor, which has long been enriching the menu of local cuisines in tropical and subtropical countries. The original home of the spice plant is located in Papua Neuginea, where it can still be found up to an altitude of 2000 meters. Due to its adaptability, the vitamin-rich mushroom herb is now also found in Australia and South Asia. The exotic plant can be easily cultivated in the pot, even inexperienced gardeners get along with the mushroom herb easily.

Location and substrate

Mushroom Rungia klossii

The perennial, herbaceous perennial Rungia klossii prefers a sheltered, warm location with high humidity. Due to the exotic demands of the herb can be cultivated with us almost only in planters. In summer, however, you can treat the plant to a sunny spot on the terrace or on the balcony. Even against a place in the light partial shade, the plant has nothing against it. The mushroom herb with its stature height of 50 to 80 centimeters is extremely tolerant of the soil. The plant can cope with humus-rich potting soil as well as with a sandy substrate. However, the soil pH should not exceed 6.7 and should not contain lime. Because this inhibits growth and prevents the roots from absorbing water.

Pouring and fertilizing

Rungia klossii is extremely sensitive to excessive dryness. The root ball of the tropical plant must not dry out at any time, as this can quickly lead to the death of the mushroom herb. For this reason, check the moisture content of the substrate more often and pour in immediately as soon as the top layer has dried off noticeably. Fall back on rainwater, because even calcareous tap water can damage the plant. However, caution is advised even when standing wet. In the bucket you can effectively counteract root rot with a few simple tricks:
  • The flowerpot must have drainage holes on the bottom.
  • Apply a drainage of porous material to the bottom of the vessel.
  • Mix the substrate with pearlite or fine pebbles.
  • Remove excess irrigation water in the planter immediately.
Depending on the site conditions, the flowering time of the mushroom is between October and January. This means that you should also water the plant regularly in winter quarters. The mushroom herb requires a humus-rich soil, especially in planters, the supply of nutrients and minerals but limited in space. Liquid and long-term fertilizers have proven equally effective in the spice plant. In liquid form, the nutrients are administered directly via the irrigation water. The supply of nutrients can also be done in winter. A phosphorus fertilizer promotes the flowers and quantity of the plant. However, watch closely the thick-fleshed leaves. If these become discolored and fall off, you should stop fertilizing in the cold season.

planting

Mushroom Rungia klossii

The perennial mushroom herb with its up to 8 centimeters long, dark green leaves is considered in this country as a culinary insider tip among gourmets. The requirements are low in order to keep the spice plant successful in your own home. To bring the plants safely through the winter, you should refrain from a year-round cultivation in the field. Rather, fall back on a sufficiently wide and deep planter, with which you can place the tropical herb in a safe location at the risk of frost. If you use normal potting soil, you should first enrich it with humus and small amounts of loam. The mushroom can be planted all year round, the leaves react in the first days, however, very sensitive to direct sunlight when switching to the field. Slowly get the stubby foliage accustomed to long-lasting UV radiation. For example, you can do this by shading the mushroom herb in the afternoon with a parasol. The dark green Rungia klossii has a bush-like habit. If the plant is cultivated outdoors in the summer months, you should therefore observe a minimum distance of about 30 centimeters between the individual plants. You can also create ideal growth conditions by mixing the substrate with humus or compost before moving.

multiply

Mushroom herb is still relatively unknown in this country, therefore rarely are the seeds available from specialist retailers. However, the seed is relatively easy to grow:
  • Choose a flat container.
  • The substrate should be low in nutrients and limescale.
  • Cover the seeds only lightly with soil and keep them evenly moist.
  • With a perforated film, the humidity is increased.
Especially tropical and subtropical plants require heat and high humidity for successful germination. If you cover the planter with a foil, you should remove it daily for a few hours. This promotes air circulation while preventing mold from forming on the substrate. However, the tropical plant can also be conveniently propagated via rooting. For this an older, strong plant is dug up and cut with an ax or a sharp spade in the middle. The plant parts as usual in humus rich soil and pour vigorously. Because Rungia klossii is predominantly cultivated in the conservatory or a light room, you can do this all year round.

To cut

Mushroom Rungia klossii

The pruning of the plant takes place directly at harvest. Use a pair of sharp scissors or a knife to cut up to 5 centimeters long shoot tips. Harvest only as much as you can consume immediately. Because the leaves lose their tasty aroma in the dry state almost completely. By cutting, you simultaneously stimulate the plant to an increased bushy shoot. If necessary, you can shorten the herb up to 2/3. This is especially necessary if the foliage takes care of you or you have not cut any shoots for a long time. By the way, wilted and dead plant parts can be removed all year round.
Tip: With mushroom herb stir-fries, soups and sauces flavor and season. Add the leaves shortly before the end of the cooking time and allow them to be drawn sufficiently.

overwinter

The spice herb is sensitive to low temperatures. As soon as the temperatures in the garden drop below 10° C at night, you should move the plant into a bright, warm room. It is wintered at 12 to 17° C, at cooler temperatures the mushroom leaves its foliage and under certain circumstances the flower stays out. Even in winter you should water regularly, but the supply of nutrients may only be moderate.
Conclusion
The spice and herb herb with its mushroom-like taste is an enrichment for the local cuisine and can be cultivated in summer on the terrace or on the sunny balcony. Mushroom herb is a welcome change for amateur chefs, and Rungia klossii is rich in vitamins.
