Rungia klossii is a plant with an amazing mushroom flavor, which has long been enriching the menu of local cuisines in tropical and subtropical countries. The original home of the spice plant is located in Papua Neuginea, where it can still be found up to an altitude of 2000 meters. Due to its adaptability, the vitamin-rich mushroom herb is now also found in Australia and South Asia. The exotic plant can be easily cultivated in the pot, even inexperienced gardeners get along with the mushroom herb easily.
Location and substrate
The perennial, herbaceous perennial Rungia klossii prefers a sheltered, warm location with high humidity. Due to the exotic demands of the herb can be cultivated with us almost only in planters. In summer, however, you can treat the plant to a sunny spot on the terrace or on the balcony. Even against a place in the light partial shade, the plant has nothing against it. The mushroom herb with its stature height of 50 to 80 centimeters is extremely tolerant of the soil. The plant can cope with humus-rich potting soil as well as with a sandy substrate. However, the soil pH should not exceed 6.7 and should not contain lime. Because this inhibits growth and prevents the roots from absorbing water.
Rungia klossii is extremely sensitive to excessive dryness. The root ball of the tropical plant must not dry out at any time, as this can quickly lead to the death of the mushroom herb. For this reason, check the moisture content of the substrate more often and pour in immediately as soon as the top layer has dried off noticeably. Fall back on rainwater, because even calcareous tap water can damage the plant. However, caution is advised even when standing wet. In the bucket you can effectively counteract root rot with a few simple tricks:
Pouring and fertilizing
- The flowerpot must have drainage holes on the bottom.
- Apply a drainage of porous material to the bottom of the vessel.
- Mix the substrate with pearlite or fine pebbles.
- Remove excess irrigation water in the planter immediately.
Mushroom herb is still relatively unknown in this country, therefore rarely are the seeds available from specialist retailers. However, the seed is relatively easy to grow:
- Choose a flat container.
- The substrate should be low in nutrients and limescale.
- Cover the seeds only lightly with soil and keep them evenly moist.
- With a perforated film, the humidity is increased.
The pruning of the plant takes place directly at harvest. Use a pair of sharp scissors or a knife to cut up to 5 centimeters long shoot tips. Harvest only as much as you can consume immediately. Because the leaves lose their tasty aroma in the dry state almost completely. By cutting, you simultaneously stimulate the plant to an increased bushy shoot. If necessary, you can shorten the herb up to 2/3. This is especially necessary if the foliage takes care of you or you have not cut any shoots for a long time. By the way, wilted and dead plant parts can be removed all year round.
Tip: With mushroom herb stir-fries, soups and sauces flavor and season. Add the leaves shortly before the end of the cooking time and allow them to be drawn sufficiently.
overwinterThe spice herb is sensitive to low temperatures. As soon as the temperatures in the garden drop below 10° C at night, you should move the plant into a bright, warm room. It is wintered at 12 to 17° C, at cooler temperatures the mushroom leaves its foliage and under certain circumstances the flower stays out. Even in winter you should water regularly, but the supply of nutrients may only be moderate.
