Gartenmelde is known to us, but is not cultivated by many. Here, the garden nursery cultivation is so easy. Here's more on this topic.
The up to two meters high growing garden (Atriplex hortensis) can be grown as leafy vegetables in almost every garden. The peculiarity of this relatively undemanding plant lies in the fact that it is available as a green-leaved, red-leaved and yellow-leaved report. And in some gardening stores now even a purple-colored variety is offered.
Cultivation of awning
Already from March (into the July into it) you can sow the garden report directly in the field. Although she does not make any great demands on the ground conditions and even thrives even in partial shade. However, low-nutrient soils should be treated with compost in advance (if possible already in autumn).
The sowing should be repeated several times at intervals of about 3 to 4 weeks, which means you will always have fresh vegetables available over a longer period of time and you will not have to process a too abundant harvest all at once.
After about 2 weeks, the garden cover has grown well in most cases, so you can thinning them with a planting distance of about 15 to 20 centimeters. Or you thin out the young plants - in about the 4th week - by harvesting.
You should not cultivate the garden announcements year after year at the same location, but rather sow them every year or every 3 years at the latest to another location. Furthermore, the message is not suitable as a postculture of beetroot or chard, but you can excellently plant this between potatoes every year.
Cultivate garden notification
If you feed the vitamin B and C-rich gardening messages during their growth now and then with a little full fertilizer, you can thus significantly increase the yield.
" To water:
Gardening should provide you with regular water. On hot days, if possible, even in the morning and in the evening watering! Unfortunately too much dryness leaves the plants shoot - like leafy lettuce too.
Pest is rarely attacked by pests. Only mildew (fungal disease) sometimes bothers her. But then you have to remove the entire plant immediately and dispose of it as household waste.
In addition, if aphids once settle on the garden notification, you only have to cut off the individually infested leaves and dispose of them as well.
Even small young plants (for example, too closely sown intermediate plants) can be harvested as a whole and processed immediately. For larger plant shrubs, however, you should only process the leaves into vegetables and dispose of the woody stalks on the compost.
Garden messages, which you have processed like spinach, are ideal for freezing. So you can enjoy the vegetables throughout the winter. If you only briefly fry the leaves, they even retain their color largely and lose only a large part of their bitter substances.
Flower and seeds
However, from the flower phase you can no longer harvest the garden as a vegetable, but only use it as a decorative vase plant. Especially the red message turns into a real eye-catcher in the glass.
The flower spikes of the message form the seeds for the coming year. You can easily keep them dry throughout the winter. However, you must then make sure that the seeds are sorted. The reporting belong namely to the wind pollinators and can quickly intersect with each other or multiply uncontrolled in the garden.
Use garden announcements in the kitchen
- Garden Melon is closely related to spinach (also known as Spanish Spinach)
- they are also similar in taste to spinach, but are milder
- Young plants (up to 20 cm) are particularly tender and readily edible
- higher levels of magnesium and vitamins A and C than conventional spinach
- In case of allergy to goosefoot we should refrain from eating the food
By the way:
If you roast the seeds in a pan or oven (about 1 hour at 220 to 250 degrees), you can use them later as a very tasty spice (also suitable for baking) in numerous dishes.
