Garden shredder: test and purchase advice

The Content Of The Article:

In spring and autumn, it makes sense to cut bushes and trees to rejuvenate them and keep them in shape. However, many a garden owner regularly faces the problem: where to go with all the branches and branches? Anyone who owns a garden shredder not only saves the annoying road to the landfill, it also produces valuable mulch or compost material for one's own garden in an instant. Because chopping is not rocket science - if you use a quality garden shredder. We have taken for you, for expert buying advice, nine devices in our large garden shredder test under the magnifying glass.

Garden shredder in the test

In order to find the right device for the various requirements, we have subjected six garden shredders in the price range up to 400 euros to a real comparison:

  • ATIKA ALF 2800
  • BOSCH AX 25 TC
  • DOLMAR FH 2500
  • MAKITA UD 2500
  • VIKING GE 140L
  • WOLF GARDEN SDL 2800 EVO

In addition, a garden shredder of the 500 Euro class:

  • ELIET Neo 1

And two from the upscale segment (over 1000 euros) for direct comparison:

  • CRAMER Kompostmaster 2400
  • ELIET Maestro City

One right away: None of the samples fell through, all tested garden shredders are recommended. What then makes the decision as well as quality is personal expectations and the individual requirements on site.

First insights and expiry of the garden shredder test

First insight: Our test has clearly refuted that a garden shredder is a noisy, noisy device. There are now Leisehacker in the trade, which actually chaff quietly. The fact that the big knife shredders are a bit louder is put into perspective when one considers that the same amount of shredded material is already shredded after a quarter of the time.
Second insight: There are no really inferior or groundless overpriced garden shredders. Between 200 euros and around 1200 euros decide only area of application, duration of use, material and wallet. The simple rule of thumb applies: for small money small quantities and small branches, for large money large quantities and large branches.
Our test was practice-oriented under real conditions and was carried out by "real" gardeners in the garden. We have deliberately renounced laboratory tests for sound analysis. We preferred to rely on the eyes and ears of our testers and those of the garden neighbors. Just as it is in a real garden, different clippings of different hardness, growth and diameter were used for the large garden shredder test - and no standardized material.

Cutting technology of garden shredders

Roll chippers perform well with little noise. They crush the shredded material very slowly. The comminution speed is around 40 revolutions per minute. This reduces the working noise and is around 90 decibels.

WOLF GARDEN SDL 2800 EVO

Well recognizable is the rotating on an axis roller with its sharp-edged teeth (Wolf Garden SDL 2800 Evo). Next to the roller is the pressure plate, which can usually be adjusted by turning the knob. At the beginning, the plate is adjusted so that fine metal shavings shear off. These land in the catcher

The branches coming from above are dismembered between the roller and the plate. In case of constipation the reverse run helps. The plus point of the rollers is that the resulting wood chips are split under pressure. This increases the surface of the shredded material and promotes the rotting process. These shredders are suitable for branch diameters of up to 45 millimeters.
A modern high-speed machine is louder than the roller devices at 100 to 110 decibels. And the even humming of the petrol engine of an Eliet Maestro City or the Cramer's cutting disc did not find our testers uncomfortable. The leader in this category is Eliet Neo, who achieved 94 dB (A) with his ax-like cutterbar. All devices moved but in a noise frame that lured no neighbors scolding the garden fence.

Test criterion safety

Safety is a priority when chopping. What good is the best device if its operation endangers life and limb? And safety starts with personal protective equipment: working gloves and goggles as well as sturdy shoes are urgently recommended. Above all, the eye protection is important because long branches under the pressure of the knife often uncontrolled back and forth and thereby cause facial injuries.
It is also absolutely advisable to wear ear protection when chopping. It does not necessarily have to be a professional earmuff - soft earplugs also reduce the noise level sufficiently.By comparison, 90 decibels is equivalent to the noise of a passing lorry, 100 decibels to that of a sounding ghetto blaster, and 110 decibels to a disco on Saturday evenings. However, with one hour continuous irrigation due to the rather jarring noises of the garden shredder, there would still be an unpleasant and permanently harmful burden on the ear.

Occupational safety when chopping

In addition to suitable hearing protection, solid work clothes, gloves and safety glasses are a must when handling garden shredders

Of course, the stability of the garden shredder belongs to the actual equipment safety. A stable, wide frame, large, non-wobbly feet as well as permanently mounted transport wheels are important prerequisites for this.
The chute must be designed so that children's hands do not fit in - even if small children are not to be found near garden chippers anyway. Nor should the knives in the discharge chute be reachable with their hands. In addition, the device must turn off automatically when pulling out the catcher.
An engine brake has been proven to be a very important protection. When the machine is stopped or stuck due to overload, the engine should be stopped immediately. A restart safety device prevents the device from continuing to run immediately when it is cleared of stuck shredded material.

Electrical safety of the garden shredder

Garden shredders need and consume a relatively large amount of electricity. Only use versions of an extension cable according to IEC 60245 (H 07 RN-F) with a core cross section of at least

  • 1.5 mm² with cable length up to 25 meters respectively
  • 2.5 mm² with cable length over 25 meters.

Test cable at the chopper test

For operation, choose the shortest possible cable to allow the motor to operate at full power

However, we recommend a shorter cable of a maximum of 4.50 meters. A long and thin extension cable creates a voltage drop and the garden shredder no longer reaches its maximum output. Other criteria that a good cable must meet and handling tips:

  • The plug and socket on the extension cord must be made of rubber, soft PVC or other thermoplastic material of the same mechanical strength or covered with this material.
  • The plug-in device of the extension cable must be splash-proof.
  • When laying the extension cable, please ensure that the cable is not squashed, kinked or the plug connection gets wet.
  • When using a cable drum, completely unwind the cable.

Test results of garden shredders up to 400 euros

ATIKA ALF 2800

Although the Atika is just under 200 euros at our check in the entry-level price category, but it is quite neat and is, as the manufacturer himself argued, "... the ideal solution for the simple shredding of branches and shrubs with up to 45 Millimeters in diameter. " Who owns the German average garden with 250 square meters of area and a simple hedge and shrub stock, is well served with the ALF 2800. Solidly processed, he will perform his job satisfactorily over several seasons.

He pulls the branches independently and evenly through the safety funnel and shreds them quietly. Its large integrated catch basket is enough (twice filled) for the daily use. Its locking lever automatically ensures safety shutdown when opening. The on / off switch with automatic reverse rotation in the case of blockages, the restart fuse for additional protection in the event of a power failure and the LED function display are also part of the standard equipment, as is an easy-to-set counter plate for a different degree of chopping result.

BOSCH AX 25 TC

Not only visually it is the most appealing among the small garden shredders - as some of our testers stated: "He can do something!" The versatile multipurpose forage harvester AXT 25 TC is equipped with the "turbine-cut-system". Thus, the manufacturer refers to a conically shaped roller, which pulls the shredded material, which can be easily filled through the profiled hopper, into the device. It ensures a very fast and blockage-free material throughput of 230 kg per hour (manufacturer specified).

For safety's sake, the device has a flow and return, if something sticks. However, this did not even happen in our large garden shredder test. In addition, the device has a stuffing wedge to support the feeder. We were able to easily shred branches and shrubs up to 45 millimeters in diameter. The 53-liter Fangbox prevents fingers from getting in the vicinity of the sharp cutting unit, because the device only works when the box is inserted. Thanks to the removable funnel, the garden shredder takes up very little space when stowed away. With the funnel removed, it has a height of 67 centimeters and only needs an area of 34 x 65 centimeters.

DOLMAR FH 2500 and MAKITA UD 2500

Although we had the two identical garden shredders consciously assigned to different test groups, both came to identical ratings. Here, when buying so only decides their own taste in terms of color - the Dolmar is orange, the Makita turquoise blue. Technically, you get with both a lot of device for comparatively little money. For with around 225 euros, they are in the lower budget range of our test candidates, but the others are in the result quite equal.

The garden shredders have a powerful engine that does not shrink from cutting debris, tree waste and branches with a diameter of up to 45 millimeters. The pressure plate of the roller is adjusted by means of a practical turning wheel with locking possibility and thus enables different cutting degrees. An easy-to-use control panel with automatic automatic return as well as reversing switch allows the cutting unit to be started again without any great effort in the event of stuck branches. Should it ever block, the roller can be over a removable plate of stuck branches free or replace if necessary - Spare rollers are available as an accessory. The garden shredders have handy handles on both sides for a secure hold and easy transportation. Rubberized wheels and carrying handle facilitate transport. The 53-liter fishing box can be locked without tools. However, this is also the case with all other devices.

Dolmar FH 2500

Like the Akita shredder, the Dolmar FH 2500 scores points in the price / performance segment and does a decent job

VIKING GE 140L

For about 400 euros you get at Viking a garden shredder with many extraordinary and thoughtful details. Our testers found it particularly practical that, thanks to a new folding mechanism, the engine and chopping unit can easily be lowered into the integrated chopper bin for space-saving storage. This reduces the height from 95 centimeters to about 50 centimeters. The heart of the powerful garden shredder is the special roller squeezing unit with a robust, slow-running knife roller. It shreds branch material carefully and quietly with only 40 revolutions per minute. Once shredded material gets jammed, the roller automatically reverses. Branches with a diameter of up to 40 millimeters pulls the GE 140 L electric shredder powerful and clean. To effectively process highly branched branch material, Viking has developed a practical shamrock opening. Optimally shredded, the chopped material falls directly into the integrated, transparent chopper container with a volume of 60 liters. With the wide chassis, the shredder is safe and easy to transport.
