Short plant description

Presumably, this climbing shrub originally came from the Southeastern European and Southeast Asian region. The Ranker can reach a height of up to 3.5 meters, it is about 1 meter wide. It grows shrubby overhanging.

From June to August, the Goji berry unfolds violet-colored flowers. This then develops elongated to roundish, orange-red fruits, which you can harvest from August to October. The shrub bears fruits for the first time three years after planting.

Location:

For the buckthorn plant, it is essential to choose a sunny and breezy location. Sunlight is important for a high yield crop. In addition, the shrub should be well ventilated, otherwise there is a risk that it will be affected by mildew.

❍ floor:

On garden soils, which are well accepted by the Goji berry, the climbing shrub also forms foothills. The ideal soil for the plant is permeable, as well as sufficiently moist and humus. If you have more of a heavy garden soil, then loosen it with sand and a strong dose of humus.

Incidentally, the cultivation of Goji berry also succeeds in regions with saline soils.

❍ Planting time:

You can plant the wolfberry plant year-round, provided the soil is frost-free at the beginning of the year. Some online plant suppliers offer young plants in a 2-liter pot from April to September.

However, the best planting time for the goji berry is spring, from March to May. Thus, the ranker can develop optimally over the growing season.

❍ Planting instructions:

  1. Pick up a 40 cm deep hole for the young plant. Put compost in this planting hole. But you can also mix the excavation content with compost.
  2. Now put the plant in the planting hole that sits 30 centimeters deep in the ground. Then fill up the hole with the excavation.
  3. Before the young plant is watered, it is best to create a pouring edge around the root area. Ultimately, the plant is thoroughly watered.

In order to facilitate the growth of the young Goji berry, it should be watered regularly during the first weeks after planting.

Pouring and fertilizing:

If the plant has grown well, then water it only in the event of prolonged dryness. The soil may be damp, but too much moisture does not tolerate the Goji berry.

For fertilizing, add fresh compost around the root area in spring. Further fertilization is not required.

Rear section:

With the right cut, you can make the plant strong and stable.

❶ In the first year after planting, cut back your goji berry to 20 centimeters.

❷ A year later leave at most 5 or 6 thick shoots, all others can be removed. In the upper part of the shoots that you left standing, you will be blooming in July.

❸ They rejuvenate the Ranker for the first time in the 4th year after planting and every 2 years thereafter. Remove 2 old shoots each. Two young shoots let you regrow. At most 10 shoots should leave them permanently.

❹ However, you can regularly remove dead, dry wood.

Diseases & pests:

The wolfberry plant is often prone to mildew. The damage picture becomes clear on the white, floury coating on the leaves and later on the complete plant. Affected plant parts are generously cut from the shrub and disposed of with household waste.

They should refrain from using fungicides as far as possible, as they may consume them over fruits. As a precautionary measure, you can spray the Bocks-thorn plant every 2 weeks from the start of shoot with a vegetable stock from field horsetail. This makes them stronger and more resistant to mildew.

Wintering:

Up to -26° C, the goji berry is frost hardy. Therefore, a winter protection for the shrub is unnecessary.

But if you have brought your young plants into the soil in autumn, frost protection for the first winter is already appropriate.Cover the root area with a layer of leaf mulch: The shoots are best protected with needle rice.

Summary:

The goji berry is a climbing shrub with delicious and healthy fruits. The shrub can grow up to 3.5 meters high. He loves a sunny and airy place. The soil should be permeable, moist and humus.

The fruit shrub is cast during prolonged drought and fertilized only with compost. The cut follows a special chronology. The goji berry is hardy, but the fall planting should be protected in the first winter.
