They thrive indoors as well as outdoors. You can plant the hemp palm both outdoors and in tubs. However, the latter has the disadvantage that it can happen during wintering that the plant is attacked by pests. The reason for this is the not ideal conditions.
If you react quickly in such a case, you can still save your cannabis palm. Here is a small overview of what pests and diseases can affect the hemp palm, how to recognize and fight properly.
The most common diseases & pests at a glance
An attack by red spiders manifests itself by yellowish to whitish discolored leaves, as well as by fine webs on the underside of the leaf. The arachnids themselves are difficult to see with the naked eye because of their small size of less than half a millimeter. If the pests multiply unhindered, the plant gradually loses its leaves and eventually dies.
Red spiders love dry air and tolerate moisture only badly. Ordinary water therefore works well as a control agent. Place your hemp palm in the bath or shower tray and rinse off the plant thoroughly. Make sure that the water jets reach all parts of the palm and devote yourself to the undersides of the leaves extensively. During the showering process, you should cover the tub with plastic wrap to prevent moisture damage to the roots.
In the near future mist the hemp palm regularly with water. This is easiest to do with a spray bottle. The palm always has enough time to dry off, otherwise it threatens fungal attack.
If the fogging does not succeed, only the handle to spraying remains. It is important to continue treatment for six weeks. In the event of premature termination, there is a risk that some eggs will survive, which will be sufficient as the basis for the next generation of red spiders.
If a black, often star-shaped layer shows up on the leaves of the hemp palm, the harmful fungus Russtau is probably responsible for this. The coating inhibits photosynthesis in the leaves, but is not life-threatening and easy to eradicate for the palm.
Simply wipe the blackish layer with a water-vinegar solution or remove the affected leaves. However, you must then eliminate the cause of the infestation, which is usually in a colonization of the palm tree by aphids or other lice.
Aphids leave on the leaves of hemp palm excrement, which are well visible as a sticky honeydew. This honeydew is used for Russtau and other harmful fungi as a food source. Other symptoms include stunted shoot tips as well as rolled and yellowish discolored leaves. The aphids themselves are between three and seven millimeters long and usually green, depending on the species, but may also be black, brown, gray or yellow.
As an immediate measure, a complete shower of hemp palm is recommended. Set shower head to medium hard blasting. In the following weeks you should regularly spray the plant with a weak soapy water and as a supplementary measure wipe the palm fronds with a damp sponge.
