The hemp palm is a true exotic in the garden and needs a little help in the winter to survive this unscathed. Because strong frost does not like the exotic at all.

Hemp palms can withstand temperatures of up to -25 degrees

In winter, you should get almost all potted plants indoors, preferably in the conservatory. Because many do not tolerate the cold. There is the hemp palm, which originally comes from the high mountains in China, very different. You do not mind temperatures down to -25 degrees Celsius. So you do not have to protect them from the cold. But that does not mean that she needs no protection and you can just leave her outside. Because it needs another protection - namely the protection against moisture.

Wrap hemp palm trees with fleece or foil

If snow falls on the hemp palms and remains on the leaves, then that is very unfavorable. The wetness is particularly damaging to the leaf roots and can lead to rot. That's why you should wrap your hemp palm with a fleece before the first snow fall. So no snow can lie on her. Make sure that you wrap the fleece loosely and do not squeeze the leaves. Then the hemp palm is still good in spring.

Alternatively, you can also fall back on a transparent film. But you have to cut extra holes in the lower part of the film. These then serve as air holes, so that does not form too much condensation.

Wedel is best tied together

If you want to do everything right, then wrap the fronds together as well. These should then be completely dry. The interstices should then be filled with straw. This warms the plant a bit in the cold season.

Protect roots properly

Before it gets really crispy outside, it is advisable to cover the root area of hemp palms, which grow in the bed, with a layer of bark mulch 30 centimeters thick.

If your hemp palm grows in a bucket, you should wrap it around with coconut fiber winter mats. In addition, it is advisable to place the bucket on a polystyrene plate and cover the root area with sprigs of pine.

Select the correct winter location

Hemp palms, which thrive in the tub, should be placed close to a shady wall in winter. So she is better protected from the icy winds.

If the winter gets really tough, then it is better if you bring the hemp palm into the house for the winter. It does not need a special location here. They can just put you in the cellar.

Pour hemp palm in winter, too

Like so many plants, hemp palms need a little water in the winter. However, you should only water the palm trees when mild temperatures prevail.

By the way:

If you have done anything wrong during the hibernation, the hemp palm will promptly inform you. It then gets frost damage and these are noticeable by brown leaves.
