Hyacinth water drift has a long tradition

The practice of hyacinths on water was already practiced in the 18th century. Instructions for drifting hyacinth bulbs

For hyacinth drifting you should use best prepared onions. Due to several weeks of heat treatment, these bulbs are able to flower earlier than untreated onions. The best time for the beginning of the Treiberei is in the weeks before Christmas, because then usually no onions are available in stores. Basically, you should expect about six to eight weeks from putting onions until flowering. To drive the onions are placed on glasses filled with boiled water. Very important: The onion soil must not come into direct contact with the water, otherwise there is a risk that the onion will rot. For driving the onions there are special hyacinth glasses: Down they are relatively bulbous, while they narrow at the top and form a small shell on which the onions are placed. You can buy these glasses, which are available in all colors, from the garden shop. With a little luck, they can also be found at flea markets, as they are very popular with collectors.
Tip: If you do not have hyacinth glasses, you can make onion holders from wire or short twigs. These can then be placed on jam or other glasses and put the onions on it. Alternatively, you can just fill glasses or bowls with glass marbles or pebbles and pour enough boiled water that the top marbles or stones protrude about half a centimeter from the water.

The prepared jars with the attached hyacinth bulbs first bring you to a cool, dark place - for example in the cellar. Here should be a temperature of five to nine degrees Celsius prevail. Let the jars stand there until a strong rooting has occurred. It is advisable to place the glass not directly on a stone or concrete floor, but on a wooden board or a piece of cardboard, so that the cold of the ground does not transfer.

Bring hyacinths to light

Only when the vessels are completely rooted, the hyacinths may bring to light. Nevertheless, keep the hyacinth glasses cool until short green shoots have formed. Initially protect the hyacinths against sunshine with small cones that you can either buy or make your own. Gradually, the plants are used to air and light, so they grow stout. The cones can be removed when lifted by the sprouting of the hyacinths. Then you can observe the further development - from the small, green shoot to the appearance of fragrant flowers.

Hyacinths with cardboard

The little cardboard hats prevent sunlight from getting into the shoots. If the shoots lift the hat high, you can remove it

Occasional refilling of the evaporated water is essential. This is usually only necessary when the shoots are in the air. The unfolded flower lasts longer if you put the tubes a bit cooler overnight. After flowering, the hyacinths can be relocated to the garden. Please do not remove the foliage. Incidentally, you can also drive the hyacinths in flower pots that will fill you with normal potting soil. In principle, this variant does not differ from the glasses filled with water, except that you then can not observe the spectacle of rooting.
