Protection times for hedges
For all hedges, guard times apply. They serve the protection of our domestic animals and extends from 1 March to 30 September of the year. During this time, only slight cuts on a hedge may be made. Anyone who does not comply with these periods of protection commits a misdemeanor that can be punished.
The right time
In principle, every hedge can be shaped all year round. However, it makes sense to find the best cutting time for the respective variety and only then to cut. Then the cut will do no damage and the hedge thrives excellently. The early spring is particularly suitable for a cut. The trees have not yet expelled and therefore look only a short time bald. The new drives quickly cover the interfaces. And the breeding business of the birds is not disturbed at this time. The hedge breeders among the birds are not disturbed.
The day for a hedge trimming should be optimally covered. Too much sun damages the interfaces. For a cut before the winter, the temperatures should still be in the plus range, otherwise the hedge looks bleak all winter and is not nice to look at.
If the hedge is cut on the 24th of June, it often drives out a second time. After that comes peace for this year. From the end of August, the cutting prohibits. The then expelled peaks can not mature until frost and can therefore easily freeze.
If the hedge is to be cut before the winter, then the fall from mid-October to early November is the right time. The hedge plants are now already in the resting phase. Now a cut is quite straightforward. The condition is that the ground is not frozen and no sun is shining. The late afternoon offers itself. Then not only the sap of the branches has retreated into the trunk and the sun can no longer dry out the interfaces.
An exception in the hedge trimming are the early flowering shrubs. These are cut only after flowering. A cut in February or March destroys the already existing flowers and the magnificent flower is destroyed. Therefore, all flowering shrubs should be cut after flowering.
The right hedgecut
Hedge plants are cut regularly so that they do not become too high or too wide. In addition, the cut stimulates branches and makes the hedges are pretty dense. This is very important for the evergreen plants. In addition, there are basics that should be considered in every hedge trimming.
- Cut an evergreen hedge trapezoidally, ie wider at the base than at the crown. Important for a lot of light.
- A straight cut allows the lower plant areas to be slightly flared from the inside out.
- Round off right-angled corners. This also brings more light into the interior of the hedge plant.
- For a straight hedge trimming you need tools like a taut string.
- Do not cut in the sun, because the interfaces burn easily.
- In snowy areas cut the hedge pointed top. This prevents snow break.
- Wear gloves when cutting. This can protect against injuries.
Laubhecken can usually be cut back strongly. They drive reliably even from old wood again. The cut is made from top to bottom. Again and again control the overall picture. Again, a horizontally stretched cord can be a good help. Again, the top should be cut narrower than below.
Cut needle hedges
Pin hedges do not forgive any cutting errors. Therefore, it is important to comply with the trapezoidal shape from the beginning. If the plants grind, the damage can hardly be corrected. Thuja or cypress trees take years to regrow. With coniferous trees such damage is irreparable. Conifers are cut for the first time only one year after planting. You need rest to grow. From the second year of operation must be cut regularly, even if the desired height has not yet been reached. Since Lebensbäume are poisonous, allergic reactions can occur with skin contact. Tip: Long-sleeved clothing and gloves protect against skin contact.
Crop evergreen hedges
Evergreen hedges such as boxwood, glossy medlar or laurel cherry should not be trimmed with an electric hedge trimmer. There are too many leaves injured. Pathogens invade the wounds and everything looks very unpleasant. Cutting with pruning shears does more work but is better for the health of the plants and the result looks much nicer.
If the main shoots of evergreen conifers are 20 to 30 cm higher than the desired height of the hedge, they are capped 15 cm above the crown height. It may form sufficient budding to overgrow the cut surfaces.
There are many tools available for hedge trimming. Important in the selection are sharp blades, strong pruning shears and good saws. Telescope tools are ideal because they can be dispensed with a conductor in their use. Cordless tools make independent of a power connection. Provided the battery lasts for a long time, working with it is just fun.
Worth knowing about hedge trimming soon
Cutting a hedge is usually not really difficult. Depending on the length of a hedge, it can be really exhausting. Therefore, keeping regular cutting dates and sharp tools are a real help. Free-growing hedges work without any cuts, but need a lot of space. In a normal garden so much space is hardly available.
- A hedge trimming should take place in spring and early summer, ie in May and June, before the bushes sprout.
- The second cut should take place in the second half from August to October.
- If you have a hedge planted the foliage, can also be cut in winter.
- Normally one cut per year is sufficient, but the hedge becomes denser when cut frequently.
