Construction manual for a mosaic table

The Content Of The Article:

The basis for the own mosaic table is a standard table frame with a frame made of angular steel. If you bring a welder and manual skills, you can also make a rectangular frame yourself from angle profiles and provide it with a suitable underframe. In the frame you lay as a base for the mosaic pattern of tiles a tailor-made tailored, at least eight millimeters thick plywood plate, which should have on each side about two to three millimeters of air to the metal edge. Calculate the entire structure (plywood, adhesive layer and tiles) so that the surface of the table later projects slightly beyond the frame so that rainwater can not accumulate along the edge of the frame.

Before you begin gluing the panel, you should first protect the frame of the tabletop from the outside with paint crepe or a special crepe film from dirt. All required products for gluing and sealing the table top are available in the building materials trade, for example from the company Ceresit. In the following picture gallery we explain to you all further working steps up to the finished mosaic table.

Prepare plywood board

First, the plywood board is coated from both sides with a special shower and bath seal. So the plate is optimally protected against water. After the drying time, lay the prepared plate in the table frame and stir the flexible natural stone tile adhesive according to instructions lump-free. Then the glue is applied with a smoothing trowel and combed through with a so-called notched trowel.

Cover tabletop with tiles

Lay tile shards or mosaic tiles from the outside in. If you lay the tiles with a straight edge to the outside, forming a clean circle end. The finishing edge becomes especially clean if you adjust the edges of the tile shards to the rounding with a tiling tool. The distance between the mosaic pieces should be about two millimeters - the arrangement is freely chosen as well as colors and shapes of the tiles. Tip: If you want to lay a uniform pattern or a figure, you should scratch the most important lines with a nail in the tile adhesive before laying.

Gaps between them

After about three hours of drying, grout the interstices of the tile shards with a special natural stone grout. To spread the mass is best a squeegee. Repaint the joints several times until they are full. Pull the remainder of the grout with the rubber wiper towards the edge.

Clean the surface

After about 15 minutes of waiting time, the grout has dried to the point that you can wash the area with a sponge and polish off the last mortar veils with a cotton cloth.

Scrape out joint

So that no water can penetrate between tile surface and metal border, the joint must be sealed with special natural stone silicone. For this purpose, the joint and metal edge are first cleaned with a small spatula.

Apply silicone compound

Now apply the elastic silicone compound along the outer edge and smooth it with a damp spatula. Then the silicone compound has to harden.
