With wood tiles one has the choice between real wood tiles, mostly from acacia wood and also from high-quality wood-plastic composites, mostly called Wood-Plastic-Composites (short WPC). These tiles are extremely resistant to moisture and weather. The UV resistance is quite high. Also on offer are gold acacia tiles. However, this is African teak, also a hardwood with good durability class. Robinia wood is often sold as acacia. This can be determined only if it is stated that the wood comes from domestic production. Acacia do not thrive in Central Europe, they are not hardy. Robinia wood is good wood and also has a good endurance class. From domestic production come wood tiles from pine, spruce and larch. However, this wood is not durable so long.

sizes

As a rule, the tiles have a format of 30 x 30 cm. One square meter requires 11 tiles. However, there are other dimensions, for example 40 x 40 cm and 50 x 50 cm. Wood tiles usually have the typical warm wood color, while the WPC tiles are often offered in shades of gray. Wood tiles can be laid in different ways, just as traditional as tiles or in the click system, similar to laminate. The latter type is becoming increasingly popular, because it is extremely simple and you need no tools or other additional material to attach. Wooden tiles are mounted on special plastic panels. They are very precise and stable. The prices for one square meter of wood or WPC tiles are around 25 €. The wood is acacia (mostly from Vietnam). Robinia wood is more expensive, about 10 €. Gold acacia is really expensive. Here the square meter costs about 70 €. Special offers with 2 € per square meter are to be considered with caution. For the price that can not be anything reasonable, that's common sense. Not only the quality is often poor, also the origin is questionable. Most of the wood comes from illegal mining areas and the workers are extremely exploited. Otherwise such a price can not come about.
Tip: When buying the wood tiles pay attention to the FSC seal. The wood comes from responsibly managed forests and not from overexploitation.

Lay wooden tiles

The easiest way to lay wooden tiles on a solid surface. On a balcony, for example, this is wonderful. A clean, level surface, laying wooden tiles is child's play. Of course, it must be ensured that water can drain, not that the tiles are left in the water for a long time. Endurance does not tolerate them. In principle, the tiles can be laid well on the following substrates: on screed, concrete, concrete tiles, asphalt or ceramic tiles. In these soils usually no bumps must be compensated. They are straight, smooth and clean and can be used immediately.

Under construction?

Although the floor must be level and smooth, but a special substructure actually do not need wood tiles. However, it is recommended to buy wooden tiles with a grid system underneath. This prevents the tile, or the wood, from being permanently wet from below. For high-quality wood tiles, this grid is standard among them. A substructure is therefore not mandatory, but often one is made of concrete, alone, because then can install a slope and is guaranteed that the tiles are permanently as directly as after laying out. Often only curbs or a frame are mounted in concrete. Such an edging gives the surface a stable appearance and a long life.

On flat ground, the tiles can be easily laid. First lay them loose on the desired surface and push them close together. You can lay out the tiles parallel or opposite, depending on which pattern you want to receive. Even offset layout is possible. It is important not to connect the wood tiles firmly to the ground, as they swell and wane in changing weather conditions. Therefore, it is also important to comply with a minimum distance of 10 to 15 mm to solid structures such as walls and thresholds. For offset laying, edge tiles must be cut. The easiest way to cut these tiles, if only the plastic grid is cut underneath. If the wood also has to be cut, then work very clean and cut as much as possible in an already existing "crack". Same procedure with the exterior tiles. All tiles together, so click together. The peripheral edge looks better when bolted to suitable boards, of course only if no other edge solution has been prepared. It is important that the laid surface forms a solid unit and that no wooden tiles can become independent.

Lay wooden tiles without click system

This is the same procedure. The difference is that these tiles usually have no substructure. As a result, the wood has constant contact with the ground. That must be stopped. Therefore, the height compensation must be made with relines. Suitable are small wooden plates or other fillers. The tiles must be raised evenly. Another difference shows up when cutting. To do this, attach a new support slat at the appropriate place and saw off the wood tile at this point. The tiles can be easily cut and cut. For example, a circular saw works well. The tiles are laid loosely. The gap should be about 5 mm. They are not connected directly.

Wooden tiles on lawn

When laying the lawn, the substrate must be prepared accordingly. Directly on the lawn a root tile is laid out. This prevents later neither grass nor weeds can grow through the cavities of the wood tile. Then a 5 cm thick gravel layer should be applied, with a grain size of 0/30 or 0/45. The gravel compensates for bumps that are common in lawns. Waves, subsidence and slopes should be avoided. Tiles laid on bumps, are constantly under tension. If they are then loaded, they tear easily and can also break. Make sure the gravel bed is slightly sloping so that water can run off.
ConclusionWooden tiles are easy to lay, at least on smooth surfaces. Especially the tiles with click system are easy to assemble. In addition to a level ground is an edge, which prevents the tiles from slipping important. Decisive for long beauty is the right choice of tiles, especially the type of wood. You should also be aware that wood needs to be maintained. WPC tiles are easier to care for, but they also do not get along without it.
