Multiply juniper - 3 ways with guidance

The Content Of The Article:

Who wants to multiply juniper. here are three options with appropriate instructions. However, this project will not be an easy task.

Multiply juniper

The juniper is one of the cypress family and brings Mediterranean charm in our gardens. The plants are also called Feuerbaum or Räucherstrauch and occur in various types with different growth forms and color positions. Anyone who does not own a juniper in the garden and would like to propagate through cuttings, may have problems in the wild. Already since the 1930s the common juniper stands under nature protection. It is allowed to pick the berries. However, cutting branches to harvest cuttings is prohibited.
Propagation of plants can be done in different ways:

1. cuttings

2nd seed

❶ Juniper multiply through cuttings

For the propagation by cuttings young, but already lignified shoots are needed. These can preferably be cut in late summer. The end of the main drive is cut off about five millimeters below a secondary drive. The next drive is then ripped off abruptly. This forms a so-called "bark tongue". The cuttings are shortened to a length of about 15 centimeters. Then you free the cutting in its lower third of the needles and cut off the shoot tip. The lower end of the cuttings is carved with a knife.

➞ Tip: If the interface is treated with "bark tongue" with Algan, Neudofix or another rooting agent, the cuttings grow faster.

The cuttings need a loose and sandy soil. In a bright location at temperatures of 20 degrees, the cuttings are rooted now. If the planter is provided with a plastic hood, the rooting can also be driven forward. The earth should be kept moist on a regular basis, but too much moisture should be avoided. In spring, the cuttings should have enough roots to be transplanted. The planting out to the desired place in the field takes place after about two to three years.

❷ Juniper multiply by seed

Propagation by seeds is rather difficult for the rather inexperienced hobby gardener, but at the same time presents a challenge. The berry fruits of the juniper appear green at first and are not suitable for seed production at this stage. It will take another two years until the berries turn blue-black and can thus be harvested in late summer to fall. Before the semen production, it is advisable to dry the berries for a few months.

In order to germinate the dried seeds, they are first watered for several days. Then crush the berries, read out the seeds and wash them over a sieve. Germination also promotes brewing with about 60 degrees hot water. After a brewing time of about two hours, the seed is cooled and stored in a plastic bag stowed away in the refrigerator for about a quarter of a year. Then it can finally be sown.

The germination temperature should be 15 to 20 degrees. The best time for sowing is autumn. The plant pot is filled with compost. The seeds are covered with sand. The seeds should be kept evenly moist. After germination, the young plants are allowed to move into a planter filled with soil and sand.

➞ Tip: Gain plenty of seeds, because the germination rate is, despite the elaborate procedure just described, exceptionally low.

❸ Juniper multiply by offshoot

Far less problematic is the multiplication by offshoots. Some junipers, such as the creeping junipers, make abundant offshoots. After the offshoots have formed enough roots, they can be separated from the mother plant and planted separately. Thus, the propagation by offshoot is by far the simplest form.

Juniper multiply: possibilities with advantages and disadvantages

Type of propagationadvantagesdisadvantage
cuttings"Propagation by cuttings is a fairly straightforward way to gain new juniper plants.
"The probability of rooting is high.
"So the hobby gardener has good chances of success.
"To get cuttings, there must already be a plant.
"Until the young plants can be set outdoors, several years pass.
seed"The soil should be loose and slightly sour.
"A mix of potting soil and clay granules is well suited.
"Cactus soil can also be used.
"The method is extremely time-consuming and tedious.
"The hobby gardener needs a lot of patience, in addition, the chances of success are comparatively low.
offshoot"It is important to choose a sufficiently large and not too light planter.
"Drainage in the bottom of the vessel protects against waterlogging.
"The roots should be preserved when planting.
"The plants are well-poured.
"The irrigation water should be able to run off immediately.
"In order to win offspring, a mother plant must be present.
"This method is limited, not all juniper species form offshoots.

Care of young juniper plants

A sunny location is important for the young juniper plants. The offshoots and cuttings are less demanding with respect to the substrate. If the substrate is enriched with peat, the young plant gets necessary nutrients immediately at planting. If hedge planting is to be carried out, two plants should be planted per meter. Juniper grows comparatively slowly.

Tip: Young plants need a lot of nitrogen. Fertilizer can be given until June.
Dryness is better tolerated by juniper than waterlogging. Especially young plants should be kept moist regularly.
