How to properly care for the lavender heath
Lavender heath prefers a moist location. This requires regular watering of the plant. The soil must not dry out. At the same time you need a sure instinct. Do not mix wet with damp, because waterlogging does not get the plant at all. Root rot would be the result here. A permeable substrate is therefore the best prerequisite for the liquid to drain off well. Heavy soils should therefore be mixed with coarse sand or gravel. In potted plants, the fluid requirement is higher than in the field. Pay particular attention to the permeability of the soil. For example, drainage from pottery shards protects against waterlogging.
The lavender heather does not tolerate lime. Therefore, do not pour the plant with fresh tap water, but rather with rainwater. If you do not have rainwater, you should use at least stale tap water. The lime content is reduced significantly. You can also mix tap water with distilled water.
Soil quality can be optimized by mixing bark mulch or peat under the substrate. To stimulate growth and flowering, you can use rhododendron fertilizers. Make sure you prefer organic fertilizer to mineral fertilizers. Here is an article on organic fertilizers and its benefits for the garden.
The Schnittverträglichkeit the lavender heather is quite good. But you do not have to constantly reach for the scissors, because the plant grows very slowly. Auslichten is enough. You can do that during flowering. This ensures that all shoots are supplied with enough light. But do not cut back directly to the bud. Keep a distance of at least one centimeter. Wilted flowers, however, should be removed immediately. This is how you promote growth and renewal.
If you have planted the lavender heath as a hedge, you should cut the shoots immediately after flowering. The cut surface should be slanted and away from the bud. So you ensure a dense and compact growth.
Always use a sharp and germ-free knife when cutting. Thicker branches can be removed cleaner and faster with a small saw.
❍ in the bed:
In the field, the lavender heath shows good hardy. The shadow bell tolerates temperatures of up to -20 degrees without additional winter protection. A protected location is an advantage, so that the winter sun does no damage to the leaves.
The soil must not dry out completely even in winter. Therefore, you should check the soil on frost-free days. If it feels dry, you should water the plant easily. Cover the soil layer with leaves or brushwood, the plant is better protected and the soil does not dry out so quickly.
❍ in the bucket:
If the lavender heath is in the tub, you must pay attention to a few things in winter. Although the container plant can remain outdoors, you will need to protect it from about October, when the nights are getting colder. Wrap the plant pot with a garden fleece, a jute sack or an old blanket. But frost can also get into the planter from below and attack the thin hair roots. You can prevent this by positioning the plant pot on a styrofoam or wood base. Depending on the location and weather conditions, the winter protection should remain at the lavender heath until February or the beginning of March.
During the winter months, you must regularly inspect the plant. Always water lightly on frost-free days so that the soil does not dry out. Frozen plant parts can be removed on this occasion.
