Lawn fertilizing with lime - Lawn lime

The Content Of The Article:

Why lime the lawn?
Due to the lack of care, the lawn consumes all its nutrients in winter and the ph value drops. The result is too acidic soil, which gives the moss and daisy a livelihood. Liming regulates the acid-base balance of the soil and the lawn gets an optimal supply of magnesium and calcium for active root growth.
Experienced gardeners lime their lawn in wet weather before fertilizing in March. Then the temperatures are usually above seven degrees Celsius and the soil can absorb the fertilizer.
Lawn should only be limed when the soil is acidic, so the pH value is too low. If plants such as clover are seen on the lawn, this could be a sign of too high pH. Additional liming increases the ph value again and the livelihood is taken from the lawn.
If you are not sure if the ph value is too high or too low, you should do a ph test on the soil.
Lime quantity depends on the ph value
Based on the ph value and the soil type, the lawn needs the following liming:
Light ground

  • ph value below 5.3 - 150 to 200 grams of lime per square meter
  • pH value between 5.3 and 5.7 - 120 to 180 grams of lime per square meter
  • ph-value over 5.7 - lawn area must not be limed
Middle ground
  • ph value below 5.7 - 300 to 400 grams of lime per square meter
  • ph value between 5.7 and 6.5 - 180 to 250 grams of lime per square meter
  • no liming at ph value above 6.5
Heavy ground
  • ph value below 6.3 - do not apply more than 400 grams of lime per square meter
  • pH value between 6.3 and 6.9 - 250 to 350 grams of lime per square meter
  • ph value for heavy soils over 6.9 - not limescale
For the amount of lime, the manufacturer's instructions should be observed.
Which utensils are needed for limescale?
How is the lawn whitewashed?
In the first step, the lawn is mowed quite deep. As a rule, the cutting height is not less than four centimeters. To remove matted moss and weeds from the lawn surface, a scarifier is recommended. After scarifying, liming can be started.
Unlike the fertilizer you can not do much wrong with the lime of the lawn. If the grass gets a hand too much lime, it does not burn the same as when fertilizing. Garden owners with a small lawn use their hands for limescale. Larger lawns should be treated with a spreader or fertilizer spreader to ensure even distribution. Wearing gloves is essential to avoid direct contact with the skin.
In the trade, the lawn lime is offered as granules, pearls or finely grained. It is important that the lawn lime is dry and has a high magnesium content. Magnesium provides a rich green color of the lawn. If the lawn is limed in a dry phase, watering of the lawn follows after liming. This ensures that the lime can penetrate the soil more quickly. After a short break of about four weeks, the lawn can now be easily fertilized.
Lawn mowing - important care ingredient
Mowing is another important part of lawn care. Regular mowing provides lush lawn growth and reduces weed formation. It is mowed when the grass has expelled fresh green. In spring, the lawn should not be cut too short, so it is not too much strain. We recommend a cutting length of three to five centimeters. Mowing the lawn shorter, the stems can not recover sufficiently. In the late spring, when the grass has recovered from the winter season and grows lush, can be mowed back to normal.
Lawn care - scarifying
Scarifying and liming counteracts weed formation. If weeds and moss have already spread on the grassy area, we gradually move on. First, the meadow is thoroughly scarred to remove the weeds. Scarifying is very effective and suitable for use on old and young lawns. Scarifiers remove weeds and dead grass, ensuring healthy lawn growth. For scarifying one can use a simple rake or even electrical devices.
Fertilize lawns
Fertilizing is also important for lawn care. Special lawn fertilizers provide a targeted nutrient supply to the soil. It is generally fertilized to specification and in rainy weather. The rainwater ensures an even distribution of the fertilizer and nutrient transport into the soil. In dry weather, it can easily cause burns of the lawn area. Preferably, the meadow is fertilized in April and July.
