Sow grass - that's how it's done

The Content Of The Article:

If you want to create a lawn, you have the choice between sowing the lawn or finished turf. Lawn sowing is a simple and inexpensive process. The prerequisite is a loose, leveled ground, which must be free of stones and weeds. Good grass seeds for an area of 100 square meters can cost depending on the provider around 30 to 40 euros. Although high-quality lawn mixtures germinate and grow slower than low-priced mixtures, they form a denser sward. In addition, quality seeds require fewer seeds per square meter, which puts the higher price into perspective. By the way, they should not store lawn seeds for too long. Some types of grass, such as red fescue, are often unable to germinate the following year.

The right time to sow grass

Basically, you can sow lawns all year round, because the seeds are hardy. However, you get the best results with fast germination. This requires a soil temperature of at least ten degrees and sufficient moisture. The best sowing months are therefore April / May and August / September.

Prepare soil for lawn sowing

Whether sowing or turf: The area should be free of weeds in any case. To achieve this, the soil has to be worked through well. This succeeds of course with a spade, but is very tedious. Here, a tiller provides good services that you can borrow on a daily basis in the motor equipment retailer. Then you should collect root pieces and larger stones thoroughly.

Work soil with a tiller

Absorb stones and root pieces

If, for example, the ground is heavily compacted by construction machinery, work the surface well with a tiller and collect stones, big lumps of earth and root pieces

A wide wooden rake is the ideal tool for raking the floor and making a so-called planum. Be very careful: bumps cause water to collect later in the depressions. With a roller, also available as a loaner in the hardware store, is now leveled in the longitudinal and transverse direction and the soil compacted. If you still see bumps, you can balance them with the wooden rake. It is best if you let the soil rest for a few days after preparation so that it can sit down.

Step by step: sowing the lawn

Measure the seed according to the package recommendation to the intended area, fill in a seeding pan and spread evenly with a light sweep. It should be as windless as possible. If you are unsure, you can practice fine sand first to get a consistent result, or use a spreader. Choose a good mix of teas from specialist retailers, not a low-priced variety like "Berliner Tiergarten", which germinates quickly but does not form a dense sward and is quickly colonized by weeds. Then rake in the longitudinal and transverse direction with the wooden rake, so that the seeds later get in good contact with the soil after rolling, germinate and grow better.

Sow turf seeds by hand

Rake lawn seeds with wooden rakes

Only experienced gardeners manage to distribute the seed evenly by hand. Spots that do not get enough seeds take longer to clear and are more easily colonized by weeds

Pull the turf roller in the longitudinal and transverse direction over the surface; This is a good bottoming made. Then connect a swivel sprinkler and adjust it so that it reaches the entire surface. In the following days, it is raining about four times a day in rain-free weather, each for about ten minutes. This is especially important, especially during and shortly after germination, lawn grasses are the most sensitive to dryness.

By rolling (left), the seed gets the optimal bottom closure and germinates better. Finally, either with a fine pouring shower or sprinkle with a sprinkler thoroughly (right)

After sowing

Depending on the weather and seed, the germination time is one to three weeks. Until the first mowing, young turf grasses are very sensitive to drought. A poor water supply can lead to growth increases. Especially in the first few weeks there is a risk that infested or already present in the soil grass weeds such as dandelion, clover or daisy germinate and establish themselves. If the individual grasses have grown into a dense sward, this danger decreases. When the new turf has grown eight to ten centimeters high, it is mown for the first time, at a cutting height of five to six centimeters. After the first mowing, you can apply a slow-release fertilizer. Then the grasses begin to branch and a dense, fully resilient turf is created. At the earliest eight weeks after sowing, you can fully use the lawn.
