The advantages of the new technology are obvious: LED garden lights are very economical. They achieve up to 100 lumens of light output per watt, which is about ten times that of a classic light bulb. In addition, they have a long life, with high-quality LED lamps about 25,000 hours. The durability and the low energy consumption also amortize the higher purchase price. LED garden lights are dimmable and also the light color can be changed often - so the light is variably applicable and controllable.
Solar lights with LED technology
Meanwhile, LED garden lights are used for almost every area and, in combination with high-performance lithium-ion batteries, also set new standards for solar lights (see interview below). Only with strong spotlights - such as for illuminating large trees - LED lamps reach their limits. Here are halogen lamps even superior. Incidentally, you can also retrofit conventional luminaires with classic incandescent bulb socket (E 27) with LED. So-called retrofit products are similar to a light bulb and have the right thread. Basically, LED garden lights have a long life. However, if a defect is found, you should not dispose of it in your household waste, as your electronic components will be recycled. Garden lights: questions to the expert
Product Scout Jörn Gaumann presents solar lights of the Solithia brand on the TV channel QVC
Previously, solar lights were rather cloudy. What has improved in technology?
Especially the processing and quality of the batteries. For our brand Solithia we use amorphous solar cells, which absorb light not only in sunshine. The lithium-ion batteries offer a higher output than conventional batteries.
How much light can be expected on dark days or in winter?
The solar cells in our lights absorb energy even in diffuse weather. After a perfect sunny day, they could theoretically shine for up to 52 hours. On cloudy days, it will still be enough for many hours. If you feel that the luminosity is dwindling, it helps to turn off the lights for a few days, so that the battery can regenerate.
How do you use light atmospherically?
I recommend especially bright lights for roadside barriers, entrances and steps. Woods, ponds and sculptures can best be staged with spots. Park lamps and lanterns fit well in the vicinity of the terrace. Fairy lights create a cozy atmosphere under a gazebo or a pergola.
How do I properly care for the lights?
Just wipe over with a microfibre cloth, done. For coarse dirt, a mild hair shampoo or a drop of car polish helps. The batteries are frost-resistant, you can easily leave the lights in any weather outside.
