Plant lettuce - cultivation and care: care

The lettuce is not only popular with amateur chefs, many hobby gardeners swear by this classic among the various types of lettuce. If you decide to sow every 3-6 weeks, you can harvest fresh lettuce anytime during the season. The crop, which is very fast growing, is suitable as spring sowing as well as summer sowing, depending on the desired variety. There are varieties that shoot up very quickly and open, while others grow very slowly in contrast to the fast-growing varieties, and the closed form remains completely intact. The cultivation as well as the care are quite simple, however, as with any plant also here mistakes can happen, which can bring a total loss of the plants with itself. Therefore, one-valued care tips are essential and should always be considered.

What has to be observed when sowing

Already when sowing should be taken to ensure that you choose a variety suitable for the season. When a spring variety is planted in the summer, the lettuce shoots up very quickly and is susceptible to pests and fungal diseases. Therefore, when buying seeds or young plants, a resistant variety should be selected against diseases.

Sowing spring varieties

When sowing spring plants, the seeds must be placed directly in the soil. Since the lettuce belongs to the family of light germs, this is then covered with some earth. It should be noted that the difference between the temperatures during the day and at night has not been more than 5 degrees. For germination, a temperature of 12 degrees to 16 degrees is ideal. The germs must then receive a uniform moisture so that they do not dry out.

The summer varieties must be pre-germinated

In the summer varieties, the seeds must germinate, this can best be done in a kitchen towel. For this purpose, the seeds are placed in the refrigerator with the kitchen crepe for 2 days and only then be converted into the bed. The heat that prevails in the summer does not allow the seeds to germinate outside. As soon as the plants are big enough, they will be shifted individually with a distance of 25 cm.

Young plants as an alternative to seed

If you do not dare to sow the seeds, the gardening stores will keep seedlings ready for spring. These can be planted very early under glass or foil. In order to prevent the mold and soil from becoming moldy in sunny weather, it is advisable to ventilate there regularly so that an exchange of air can take place. Anyone who wants to plant the young plants directly into a bed must be patient until the soil is completely frost-free. The location must be carefully selected as lettuce needs a sunny spot. The soil should be pre-treated so that it is not only nutrient-rich, but also very loose and permeable.
The young plants can then be planted in a decency of about 25 cm. The plants should not be planted too deeply, otherwise they can rot very quickly. Once the plants have been planted in the right location, they need to be watered regularly. The soil must always be kept moist, but every gardener should not use too much water.

The care of the plants

The care of the lettuce, however, is very simple. The plants must be watered regularly, so that the leaves do not become too hard. However, care should be taken when casting that only the soil is poured and not the plants. As soon as the young plants form the typical heads, the casting should be reduced. So that the soil can better store the moisture, it is advisable to create a mulch layer around the plants. The mulch also keeps out disturbing weeds.
Compost is excellent as a fertilizer, so you do not need to use additional fertilizer. However, manure is very unsuitable, even if the soil is already fertilized, this must not be fertilized again. Otherwise, the plants become susceptible to diseases and pests. When growing in containers, it is recommended to use special vegetable soil, as this is fertilized.
When it comes to care, it is not only about the correct irrigation, it is recommended that a lettuce is already resident against pests and some fungal diseases. Numerous dangers lurk in the vegetable patch, the most common being the nudibranch. This likes the taste of the lettuce. However, you get this problem with simple means back under control. If snails are visible on the lettuce, it is enough to simply peel them off and place them in another corner of the garden. A net, which can be stretched over the bed, reduces the visit of the snails many times. Therefore, every gardener who wants to grow the salad, also plan such nets.

Lettuce - Lactuca sativa

If other pests have attacked the lettuce, no one should immediately resort to chemicals. After all, later on the food and the chemicals used is taken. There are many biological agents that can work wonders on such pests. The situation is different with fungal diseases, in this case the salad is usually beyond salvation and must be disposed of. The most common reason for a fungal disease is the PH value of the soil. This must be balanced, even salad requires a pH of more than 5.5 percent. With humus and special soil, the PH value can be re-regulated so that other lettuce plants do not suffer.

Enjoy your own cultivation

If a hobby gardener keeps these important foundations for the cultivation and care of lettuce, nothing stands in the way of a profitable harvest. Even minor setbacks should not throw anyone back, but you can learn valuable things from mistakes made.

Cultivation tips

As the lettuce sprouts and grows very quickly, it ensures fresh green on the lunch table in the still cool months. In the field you should start sowing only at the end of April, where the seed should be covered with fleece. Young, like adult lettuce plants are often haunted by snails. However, there are now also snail-resistant breeds to buy, who has many snails in the garden, should perhaps fall back on these varieties. This saves a lot of work and nerves. Lettuce grows next to parsley and celery, in addition to almost all plants like, even in mixed culture. Greenhouse varieties are slightly more nitrate-contaminated than the outdoor varieties. The darker outer leaves are more rich in vitamins than the slightly yellowish heart, so they taste a bit more bitter. The heart, with the yellowish to light green leaves tastes milder and sometimes even slightly sweeter.
Especially children like salad hearts, as an accompaniment to meat dishes, because they do not taste so bitter-bitter. Lettuce likes humus rich soil in a sunny location. The harvest can be done continuously, as needed. Some varieties can also be harvested as young plants (without a trained head) and prepared as a salad. If you like green lettuce on the table, you are also served well with the pickle salad, which tastes almost as good as lettuce, only a little milder. Lettuce leaves must be washed before preparation. Earth likes to settle between the leaves. Snails also like to leave their mark between the leaves. Under running, cold water, however, the individual leaves can be cleaned very well and the cold leaves keep the lettuce leaves fresh and crisp for a little longer.
