Hibernate mammoth leaf: How to bring the big plant through the winter without damage!

The Content Of The Article:

The mammoth leaf is a huge exotic shrub that tolerates cold temperatures only a little. Therefore, you should take appropriate care measures for the winter so that you can enjoy the plant again in the coming year.

Mammoth leaf hibernate tips

The mammoth leaf is a gigantic plant that can grow up to three meters high and develop a leaf diameter of two meters.

The plant comes from the warm Brazil and is therefore not completely frost-free. In a deeply perforated soil even the roots can die off. With some protective measures, which I will explain to you below, the exotic plant comes through the cold season quite well.

Preparation for the winter

Before the mammoth leaf is winterized, you should still take some precautions. This includes, for example, cutting the inflorescences and stems after flowering and also cutting the petioles to about 30 centimeters above the ground. Although the mammoth leaf would take over part of the work itself, because all above-ground plant parts die off after the summer, the plant saves energy and consumes less nutrients through the cut.

Attention, the stems of the mammoth leaf are very strong, with small spines occupied and up to ten inches thick. Wear work gloves and use a sharp pruning shears or hedge trimmer. The leaves can be used as a part of winter protection for covering.

Winter protection for the mammoth leaf

Thoroughly clean the root area. Moist foliage, leftover small plant and leaf parts can mold in the winter and must be removed. Also check the soil for slugs.

For covering different materials are suitable, for example:

  • dry leaves
  • straw
  • brushwood
  • coir mats
  • cut off leaves of sequoia

If you use sequoia leaves, the stems should point upwards. In addition, the antifreeze must be weighted with stones so that it does not fly off in windy conditions. Not favorable are covers with dimpled foil. The mammoth leaf also needs air in winter, because the remaining parts of the plant can otherwise mold. At the latest in November the frost protection should be complete.

Special case young plants: wintering in the house

Small Mammutblattpflanzen, which you have used in the summer in the pot, overwinter in the house. Here the autumnal pruning is omitted. The plants come into a cool and dark room and should be watered from time to time.

In spring, you can put the pots in the open air, but should still pay attention to cold temperatures in the nights.

After the winter: How to get used to the mammoth leaf to rising temperatures

After winter, the mammoth leaf has to slowly get used to the rising temperatures. Therefore you should only remove the antifreeze step by step. If, however, a strong winter threatens again, you must protect the root area again.

In botanical gardens, therefore, a large wooden box is often used, which you can put over the plant and open the lid. This allows you to react quickly to changeable weather - an acquisition that is well worthwhile for real mammoth leaf lovers and can be made by experienced hobbyists themselves!

The Mammutblatt is in the spring again quickly, so you can look forward to the next season on your plant with the giant leaves!

  • Cut inflorescences and stems after flowering
  • Shorten autumn leaves to 30 centimeters
  • Thoroughly clean the floor
  • Cover root area with frost protection
  • Slowly get used to heat in spring
