Many hobby gardeners are already weeds in the lawn a thorn in the eye. If there are mushrooms, it will try to control the situation with all possible means.

Mushrooms turf removal tips

In the evening, the beautiful green lawn and then in the morning, the lawn is full of mushrooms. In itself, that is not bad, but for many garden owners, it is an unsightly condition when sprouting small mushrooms everywhere in the lawn. Especially when the so-called hat mushrooms appear circular. One then speaks of a witch's ring. But getting rid of them is not that difficult. You only have to consider a few important points.

Causes of fungi in the lawn

In the lawn, mushrooms occur when the soil is low in nutrients, the lawns are heavily matted, or when the soil is too moist. Usually, either through the weather or excessive watering has formed waterlogging, which then offers ideal conditions for the mushrooms in warm temperatures. By the way, you can also get the problem with turf. This problem is usually due to the high proportion of organic material in the roll lawn substrate.

You should never do that against the mushrooms

A big mistake that many people make is to stop the mushrooms from mowing or to machine them with a lawnmower. You should avoid this, as this will spread the spores over a large area and the fungi will spread even more. You should therefore remove the fruiting bodies before mowing.

So you get rid of the mushrooms again

Aerate lawn:

In order to prevent waterlogging on the lawn, it is advisable to aerate the lawn, ie to aerate it. It is best to use a special aerator. This is a device that has spikes on the underside and thus punctures the ground. Alternatively, you can also resort to Lawn Shoes with soles with spikes. You just have to walk across the grass. Find out more about all aerators here. Incidentally, the best time for aeration is spring between March and May, or fall between September and October.

Scarify the lawn:

It also does not hurt if you scour the lawn once a year in spring (March to May) or in autumn (September to October). This works best with an electric scarifier, which you can borrow in every construction and garden center. This device has knives that penetrate perpendicularly when scurfing in the ground and loosen up the soil. How to proceed properly when scarifying, you can find out here.

Fertilize the lawn:

Fungi in the lawn can also be a sign of a nutrient deficiency. So it does not hurt to treat the lawn with a slow-release fertilizer that is nitrogen-stressed. Recommended is e.g. Compo Lawn Fertilizer with long-term effect (available here, for example). It is suitable for play, sports and ornamental lawns and ensures with its long-term effect for a dense, lush green lawn, which defies moss and weeds.

Lawn Lawn:

On acid soil mushrooms thrive especially well. To prevent this, it is advisable to lime the soil, because lime raises the pH of the soil. How much you have to lime, tells you a so-called soil test (here a guide). For light, sandy soils you only need to lime a little. For a light soil with a pH of less than 5.5, 150 grams per square meter are sufficient. With loamy soils it should already be 300 grams per square meter. If the soil has a pH above 6.9 you do not need to lime at all.
