Hobby gardeners, who are keen to experiment and have a little patience, can easily multiply the oleander (Nerium oleander) themselves. There are four methods for this: cuttings, division, refining and the cultivation of seedlings from seed. The order corresponds to the degree of difficulty or the success rate.
Oleander multiply by cuttings
With this method, oleander can be increased most easily and at the same time in larger numbers. The right time for the cuttings is when the mother plant undergoes a pruning - basically from spring to late summer. When pruning, there are enough one- or two-year drives, all of which can be used. Make sure that the cuttings are about 20 centimeters long, remove all leaves at the bottom and use a sharp knife to cut the bottom end over the eye at a shallow angle. Now, rooting cuttings are either simply placed in a glass of water or placed in a seedbed with a special seedling cover and covered with a transparent hood. The right temperature for rooting is important: Make sure that the oleander cuttings are as bright, warm and draft-free as possible. The cuttings root the fastest in the summer months.

After the first stable roots have formed, place the young plants in pots of potting soil, which should be mixed with some slow-release fertilizer. Oleander multiplication by division
For the division actually only older Oleander come in question, which were cultivated in the bucket. Although only a few but relatively large plants are obtained by this method. The division itself is quite simple: Remove the plant from the bucket and cut the root ball with a long sharp knife. Make sure that there are about the same number of shoots per new plant, and cut some of them. Before planting in the new pots, well-water the root ball and enrich the new soil with some slow-release fertilizer. Usually the plants are strong after the division and quickly regain their old beauty.
Vegetative propagation through refinement
Another method of vegetative propagation of oleander is the refinement. It is especially necessary if you want to use a plant with special properties. Some varieties, for example, are susceptible to fungi of the genus Ascochyta - these should be ennobled on a resistant seedling pad. Oleander varieties are usually also processed as seedlings on seedlings or strain-forming cultivars, which have little tendency for the rootstock to thrive at the base. The refinement requires some expertise and skill. It takes place as in the fruit trees either in the winter by the so-called copulation or in the summer with well in the juice standing plants by Okulation. The growth rates are very high in both finishing methods, if one masters the techniques reasonably.

Since oleander forms seeds, sowing is also possible. However, this is a game of chance, in which only after about three years shows which flower shape and color the offspring have. The reason for this is that the newly grown plants do not have to resemble either the growth or the flower coloration of the mother plant. Propagation by seeds is therefore only interesting for oleander breeders who select from the numerous offspring the best plants as new varieties and then propagate vegetatively. One advantage is that when seed is grown, no diseases of the parent plant are transmitted to the offspring.
