Onions are generally quite long, but there are also differences, some are just better suited.
Basically, the late varieties that are harvested in the fall are much better than those that are ready for harvest in spring or summer. The varieties harvested in autumn can be kept throughout the winter. The onions harvested in the warm season should always be used up in a few weeks.
The sharpness actually has an influence on the storability of onions. The spicy varieties contain sulphurous substances which are responsible for the tears of the eyes when cutting. However, these are also the reason that you can store them for a long time. Although the milder varieties are more pleasant to cut, they are not suitable for prolonged storage.
Before storing your own onions
If you want to store onions from your own harvest, they should first get a sufficiently solid shell after harvesting. This happens completely uncomplicated by simply ripening. If you are looking for a warm, airy place where it is dry, this could be a shed, for example. Spread out a tarp and place the harvested onions on top. There must be no sun on it, that could lead to a bitter taste.
After about four weeks, the onions are ready. The skin on the stems should then be withered and otherwise firmly enclose the onion. Before storing, the roots are cut off with a sharp knife. Onions with a cracked shell, bruises or green stems are disposed of. Shorten the leaves to about three centimeters, but you can also leave them and braid.
Store the onions properly
As for the storage of onions, it is an undemanding vegetable. You can store them under good conditions for up to six months.

It is important in any case that the storage location is cool, dry and dark. If you have too much brightness, you are quickly pushing hard. If the place is too wet, rot threatens from within. The ideal place to store onions is the basement, as long as it is dry.

Bring the onion down so that they do not sweat. So in baskets, nets or just on a clean surface. If you do not have a cellar you can store the onions in a pantry as long as it is dark and not too hot. However, they stay there for a maximum of about four to six weeks.

Whole onions do not belong in the fridge, at most already cut ones can be accommodated there. Place the onions in a plastic container, with the cut surface facing downwards, and then close it in airtight. In this way, you can keep the cut onion for another two days.
