Ovangkol - wood, parquet, profile

The wood Ovangkol, also known as Ovengkol, is characterized by its dark brown basic color and its fine, wavy, black-brown grain. It is a tropical wood that is hard, but quite elastic.
Ovangkol is used in many areas, because in addition to the use of furniture or parquet, there are also many musical instruments, e.g. Guitars, double basses or xylophones made of this wood.
Properties of Ovangkol
Ovangkol is very elastic and can therefore be processed well, does not break easily and has very good acoustic properties. The scientific name of Ovangkol is "Guibourtia ehie". It is a roughly grained wood and very similar to the walnut in appearance, which is native to Europe.
The wood is very heavy and therefore has the best strength properties. However, it is known that in the near-market areas often short, dry fractures occur, so that the breaking strength is low at these locations.
Ovangkol has a high density, so you have to spend much more power in the processing. At home is the tree, which has a cylindrical trunk with curvatures at the trunk ends, in West Africa. In addition to very pronounced roots, the tree often has knot-free lengths of about 15 meters and has a diameter of 60 to 80 centimeters.
The sap appears in yellowish gray to gray and has
different width, which are between four and ten centimeters. The heartwood often shines dull and sometimes has a five to ten millimeter thick stripe, which is fresh almost black and dry dark brown.
The wood is well protected against fungal and insect attack and also resistant to the different weather conditions. The Ovangkol tree grows mainly in the rainforests of Western and Equatorial Africa. Here they can grow up to 40 meters without further ado.
Uses of Ovangkol
Ovangkol is a typical plywood because of the brown to olive brown base color and the clearly visible color stripes. It is often used for decorative purposes, especially in high-quality furniture viewing surfaces. Also for paneling and panels this wood is used.
If the Ovangkolholz professionally tailored, that it is due to its grain a real highlight - especially as a parquet floor. But this special feature also has its price, because after all, this is a tropical wood.
Although Ovangkol's treatment is fairly simple compared to other tropical woods, not many furniture makers or carpenters have much experience with wood. It is not very common, it can be sawed, sanded, glued and planed well.
As already mentioned, Ovangkol likes to be used in instrument making because it has impressive sound characteristics. Ovangkol sounds dark and powerful, with a lot of sustain and growl.
