Of course, we do not know plants that are not native to us, or only from the walk over the weekly market. This includes Pak Choi, the Asian mustard cabbage. Sounds interesting, right? If you feel like trying this cabbage, try it. The cultivation is not that difficult.

Worth knowing about Pak Choi

The Asian mustard cabbage lives up to the Chinese cabbage. He is much milder, but still spicy. Pak Choi tastes only mild after cabbage. At first you may find it a bit strange to get used to it, but you will not want to miss it soon. The stems are crisp and the leaves very tender. It can be prepared like spinach, that is, stewing. The mustard cabbage is also good in wok dishes and casseroles.

The great thing is that you can enjoy Pak Choi without regrets. The vegetables are finally full of healthy nutrients. Included is e.g. plenty of potassium, calcium, vitamins A and vitamin C. With about 20 kcal per 100 g, the mustard cabbage is a true lightweight among the vegetables.

The Asian-derived vegetables are still cultivated mainly in China, Japan and Korea. But even with us, he is increasingly cultivated. Just try it out and convince yourself of the wonderfully aromatic taste.

How to grow Pak Choi yourself

Location:

As you may think, the mustard cabbage may be a bit warmer. So he prefers a sunny to partially shaded spot in a medium heavy, humus soil. On top of that, the site must be sheltered from the wind.

Cultivation time:

If you want to sow the Pak Choi directly in the garden, then you should wait until the end of June or beginning of July. On the other hand, if you prefer it, you can start it in early spring and plant it out in April. However, we advise against it, since preferred Pak Choi tends to shoot. So in the summer, rather plant it directly in the garden.

In the direct sowing the Pak Choi is sown in rows with a distance of at least 20 centimeters - rather a little more, because the plant is very large. The sowing depth should be about 2 centimeters.

If you prefer the mustard cabbage in early spring, sow it in small pots. From April you can plant it in the garden. Make sure, however, that you implement the entire root ball. A row spacing of 25 centimeters and a distance of 20 centimeters in the row are optimal.

Fertilize / Casting:

Since the mustard cabbage grows quite fast, it also needs a lot of nutrients. That's why it's best to work compost in the ground in spring.

Pak Choi loves water and needs to be wetted regularly, otherwise he leaves the leaves hanging quickly.

Harvest:

You can harvest the Pak Choi if you like the size of the plant. So you can harvest some younger vegetables as well as big plants. First, however, harvest only every second plant. So the others have even more space to develop. At the latest, when temperatures are about 0 degrees, you have to get the Pak Choi completely out of the bed.

To keep the Pak Choi fresh longer

After the harvest, the Pak Choi does not last very long. It is best to prepare it on the same day or the following day. If you want to have some of the vegetables longer, just leave it on the bed or harvest the mustard cabbage and roots. Then hit in the basement in damp sand and it will keep fresh for several weeks. We do not recommend you to freeze the vegetables because it only gets soggy.
