Sow parsley, but when?

Parsley is a herb that we like to use in salads and sauces or even sprinkle on butter bread. It tastes and is naturally healthy - who would have thought. However, although many planting books say that you should sow parsley in the spring, you should refrain from it. Due to the still unsafe weather conditions and the risk of frost, the seeds can germinate worse and slower. This in turn favors the infestation with mushrooms. If you want to avoid that, sow parsley in July. Due to the warm temperatures, the herb can develop faster and is also better protected from the fungi.

By the end of August you can harvest the first leaves. If you are lucky enough and the winter does not get too hard, you can even harvest fresh parsley into the month of May. The prerequisite is that you plant the parsley properly.

Location & ground

Parsley is an umbellifer, which thrives best in a bright location. It does not tolerate direct sunlight. So choose a half-shady spot. When choosing the location, always remember that you must never sow parsley in the same place. Parsley is incompatible with itself and other umbelliferae. Four years should be at least in between, before sowing again at this point. Parsley especially likes neighbors like tomatoes, onions, leeks, cucumbers and radishes. As for the ground, you do not have to pay much attention here. The soil should be only permeable and loose so that rainwater and irrigation water can drain well. Then the parsley feels good.

So plant parsley properly

When it is finally July you can sow the parsley in the garden. You can sow up to 300 seeds per running meter.

If you want to play it safe, you prefer the parsley in the house in the spring. Simply sow the seeds in pots. After just a few days, the first seedlings will be on display. After the second pair of leaves has formed, you have to separate the plants. When the ice saints are over, you can put the young parsley plants in the garden. Keep a distance of about 20 centimeters between the plants. And then it's time to wait, because parsley grows very slowly, unlike other herbs.

How to care for parsley properly

❍ pouring:

Pour the parsley regularly and evenly. But do not give too much water, because that does not tolerate the parsley at all. Always water first because the top layer of soil has dried off.

❍ Fertilize:

You really do not need the parsley to fertilize. However, it is advantageous if you incorporate some ripe compost into the bed before planting.

❍ overwintering:

Usually the parsley does not need winter protection. However, if the winter is very cold, then cover the parsley with a little brushwood.
