After the winter, many people can not wait to go back to the garden to start setting up and caring for the grounds and the pond.
Especially at the pond, however, a little patience is needed, because the pond care after the winter should begin only when the water temperature is constantly above 10° C.
Care after the winter
When the outside temperature and thus the water temperature gradually rise again, it is time to first clear the pond of leaves, dead plants or parts of plants and other impurities. The easiest way to do this is to use a net to remove not only the leaves and parts of plants on the surface of the pond, but also those that have sunk to the bottom of the pond.
Alternatively, a sludge sucker can be used to clean the pond bottom. Usually only part of the water is changed in the spring, but if it is to be completely replaced, the pond liner can be thoroughly cleaned at the same time, making the work a bit easier. But spring is also the time to take a close look at the pond to see if the frost has caused damage and to correct it.
The water change
The water in the pond should be checked regularly for its pH, water hardness and its ingredients. This study is especially important when keeping fish in the pond and can be done easily by any pond owner even with small test strips. If the results of an investigation are unfavorable, it may not be necessary to change the water, because there are also some means and measures that can improve the quality of the water.
Replace aquatic plants
- Non-hardy aquatic plants, which you have taken out of the pond in autumn, will be put back in the pond in the spring. If necessary, they are previously placed in larger baskets or divided to put the pieces individually in planters. A long-term fertilizer, which is added in the form of granules in the potting soil, provides the plants throughout the summer with the necessary nutrients.
- When planting it is important to pay attention to the depth of water for which the plants are suitable. Pond plants that have remained in the pond and have now spread too much will be cut back. This is often the case with both water lilies, which quickly cover the entire water surface at a convenient location.
- Finally, it is the pond shore's turn, where dead plant parts are removed, so that the grass again expelled from the rhizome and the fresh green is not covered by the dead leaves. It may be necessary to renew some plants or add more ones. They are best planted in the spring, so they can develop well until the fall and are not exposed to the blazing sun immediately after planting.
The pond pump and pond filter are first cleaned after the long winter break and checked for their function before they are used again in the pond. A UVC lamp used in the filter has a limited lifespan and is less effective, even if it still looks functional. It should therefore be exchanged once a year.
Fish in the pond
Fish in the pond hibernate and may not be fed or disturbed during this time. Only at a constant water temperature of 10° to 12° C, they are slowly awake again, can often look back to the water surface and get back from then feed. The pond care in the spring should be done at a pond in which fish are kept, therefore, under no circumstances, before this water temperature is reached, otherwise you would disturb the fish in their hibernation and thus harm their health.
