Since balconies are always exposed to the weather, even with conscientious care they occasionally attract minor or even major refurbishment work, no matter how heavy the load is on the actual use of the balcony.

Many of these works can be carried out by experienced DIY enthusiasts without hesitation. Smaller renovation work on the balcony

So that it does not have to come to a comprehensive balcony renovation, it is advisable to regularly scan the balcony for defects, such as porous or ailing tile joints and / or loose tiles, and to remedy the damage found as quickly as possible. Also, defective tiles on the balcony should be replaced immediately, otherwise moisture could penetrate through their cracks and could cause serious consequential damage no later than the next frost.

  1. To loosen damaged tiles, the surrounding mortar joints should first be removed as carefully as possible.
  2. The best way to do this is with the help of a milling cutter with so-called tungsten carbide milling insert.
  3. Once the joints have been removed, a check is made to see if the damaged tile can be lifted out.
  4. If not, it must be smashed carefully. It goes without saying that safety goggles must be worn, especially since tile splinters can be very sharp-edged.
  5. After all tile parts have been removed, the substrate must still be freed from the old tile adhesive and any residual grout.
  6. Then a new tile is inserted after previously spreading fresh tile adhesive in the gap.
  7. For smaller tiles, however, the adhesive can be applied directly to the tile underside.
  8. The adhesive which swells when the new tile is pressed into the joints must be removed immediately.

Finally, only has to be grouted. If only old joints are to be repaired, it must be ensured that all loose parts have been carefully removed before new grout is applied. For expansion joints, which run along the house facade, by the way, no conventional grout, but rather silicone should be used. Needed tools:

Far-reaching balcony renovation

The longer the previously mentioned deficiencies have not been resolved, the more likely it is that serious consequential damage has occurred over time. On the other hand, the said deficiencies may also be a consequence of fundamental damage to the balcony or errors already made in the construction of the balcony. In these cases, far-reaching balcony renovation should at least be considered.

However, if moisture gets inside the house, the balcony must be completely renovated. However, there are too many approaches, as that at this point on all without exception, could be received in sufficient quantities, which is why unfortunately only two variants of the balcony renovation can be presented in more detail.

Variant 1 - New balcony flooring

However, it should be noted that the actual capacity of the balcony due to any hidden damage could be significantly lower than noted in the blueprint. Before the new floor covering is applied, the old floor covering should be roughened with a grinding machine, as this gives better adhesion. The further construction of the second floor covering then corresponds to the procedure in the second variant.

Variant 2 - Rebuild balcony floor

In the second variant, the old flooring is first removed completely. The clear advantage of this variant is that in this way as far as possible all possible defects are discovered directly.In addition, the weight load that acts on the balcony, in contrast to the first variant does not increase. Once the complete floor covering has been removed without residue, potential cracks are repaired. Then it is checked whether the balcony floor has a slope that runs descending from the house wall. If not, a coat of screed with a gradient of 2 to 5 percent should be applied to the clean balcony floor. Ideally, the floor was treated with so-called deep ground before applying the screed.

Once the screed has hardened, it is sealed. Probably the simplest type of sealing is likely to be a weatherproof and, above all, water-repellent tarpaulin. If several plans are needed, it is important that the respective planers overlap sufficiently. In addition, the tarpaulin should be laid a little way up the front of the house. In order to protect the tarpaulin against damage, a fleece layer can be laid between it and the screed as well as the final floor covering. In addition, there are so-called thin-film drainage systems, which visually remind of a network or grid and can be easily applied on the balcony. Finally, only the actual floor covering, such as tiles, wooden floorboards or flagstones, has to be laid.

Conclusion: considerations for balcony renovation

Comprehensive balcony renovation, even if you do it yourself, always involves a lot of work and high costs, so it is advisable to repair any damage that seems to be inconspicuous or harmless. If, however, a complete balcony renovation is inevitable, the second option should be preferred. If everything is clear, the budget has been determined and approved by the Family Council, the landlord has agreed (if you can, if necessary, let your draft be signed off), you can start.
