Cutting tips from the expert

Björn Scharbert

Master of gardening Björn Scharbert is head of section "Schnitt" at the nursery Lorenz von Ehren in Hamburg

Mr. Scharbert, the roof shape is perfect when you buy it at the nursery. What do you have to do to keep it that way?
After planting in the garden, it is important to shorten the flat crowns regularly. Again and again you will find the information to cut in winter and summer. In my experience, you should cut the trellis twice in summer in the garden: before Johanni (24 June) and again at the end of August. This leads to a better branching. However, you should not cut the trees in bright sunlight, but only on days with overcast skies and humid weather as possible.
What should be considered?
One should be free from giddiness, because to cut back one rises so yes on a high ladder. And you must not be squeamish, because up to one meter long Neutriebe be shortened along the framework of bamboo sticks so strong that the side edges and the top of the crown after the procedure again flat and smooth. The best way to achieve this is with a hedge trimmer, instead of separating each shoot individually with a pruning shears.
Are these recommendations also valid for other roof trellis?
Yes, there are now many other woody plants that are grown as green roofs, for example marsh oak, ornamental apple or linden. They are usually not as vigorous as the plane trees, but are cut back in late summer in the same way.
Which tool do you need?
Whether pruning shears or secateurs: It is important that the cutting tool is clean and sharp and the shoots are cut off smoothly. Blunt blades often interfere with the interfaces.

A nice selection of suitable trees

The cutting and shaping of woody plants has a long tradition. In the home garden trellis forms are back in fashion, because with their relatively small, flat crowns, they are also important vertical design elements. Garden owners can look forward, because there are now a variety of species and varieties that are visually very different. In addition to large-leaved plane trees and mulberry trees, not only marsh oak, linden or ginkgo are highly recommended alternatives. With flowers and fruit decoration inspire, for example, ornamental apple, ornamental pear or blood plum. Since roof-shaped trees do not cast a large shadow, they can also be planted with perennials, grasses, roses or small ornamental shrubs.

Quercus palustris

The swamp oak (Quercus palustris) grows on all normal to dry locations. The deeply cut foliage bears an orange-yellow autumn color

Even without leaves an ornament

Plane trees can also be trained as a roof trench by pulling the horizontal branches of the tree around the trunk like wheel spokes. From these flat-standing branches grow every year numerous vertical upward shoots, which are cut back regularly in winter completely down to the respective main branch. Over the years, theatrically thickened people are born.If necessary, you can perform another care cut in the summer.

Shopping tips for roof trees

The easiest way to buy a roof-shaped tree is to go to a tree nursery or a well-stocked garden center. There you can look at the plants in peace and choose a specific copy. Although copies are sometimes offered on the Internet for less than 200 euros, brand trees are transplanted more than once and they have a corresponding crown height of over 250 centimeters, a strong trunk and a perfectly formed crown. Such trees can cost several hundred and even over a thousand euros. For this, the garden owner has a wood, which he has to cut back after planting only once or twice a year.
