The sound of rippling water in your own home can be very reassuring, and even in the middle of the big city, it creates an oasis of calm. The assortment of indoor fountains ranges from soft lapping to powerful noise. But also almost completely silent models, which are more of a haven for the eyes than a listening experience, are now available. In addition, Zimmerbrunnen have a reputation for having a positive effect on our health. They filter the room air and thus significantly improve the living environment. In winter, with a room well, the humidity increases in rooms, so that the dry heating air can be less harmful.

The softly babbling sound has a soothing effect on most of us and promotes relaxation. Some even speak of an energy source that helps with difficulty falling asleep and inner restlessness. Even tinnitus sounds would be easier to bear. In numerous Far Eastern teachings such as Feng Shui or Zen, the water also plays an important role and is an integral part of many interiors. Other voices, on the other hand, warn against the increased risk of mold and the danger of germs. A regular cleaning of indoor wells is indeed essential - otherwise even threaten allergic reactions or irritation of the lungs. Therefore, we have summarized for you interesting facts and tips for the care of Zimmerbrunnen.

These indoor fountain models are available

In principle, Zimmerbrunnen can be divided into two categories: one-circle and two-circle. Einkreiser have, as the name implies, only a water cycle. Most of the room wells are built that way. Two-circuiters, on the other hand, are only used in planted indoor fountains. The one water cycle here is a so-called clear water cycle, which flows exclusively through the pump and the fountain itself. The second contains a nutrient solution and only waters the integrated plants. Both are completely separate. The nutrient cycle is much more costly in terms of care and maintenance.

As for the look and shape of indoor fountains, there are no limits to your imagination. In addition to the classic ball and pyramid fountains, there are various light wells (with LED lamps in a wide variety of colors) or aroma fountains, which are provided with an added scent, giving off a pleasant smell. Gemstone wells, entire water walls or basins integrated in the ground are also found in stores. They all vary in size and are suitable for either the floor, the table or the wall. Also standing or hanging models are available.
The typical materials from which Zimmerbrunnen are made are granite, marble, sandstone or slate. Also, they come in a variety of colors and patterns. Natural and gemstones are particularly popular. Fountains made of artificial stone (mostly polyresin), stainless steel, ceramics and glass have proven themselves for a modern furnishing style. In terms of style, they are mainly inspired by nature, following aesthetic concepts or pure design objects. Bamboo indoor fountains are frequently featured in Feng Shui.

The right pump

No pump - no room well - it makes the water circulate and provides movement and typical sounds. In principle, it works as follows: A motor sucks in water through a filter and then presses it in the desired direction, usually upwards. There are battery powered pumps or many can be easily connected to the wall outlet. Meanwhile, solar-powered indoor fountains are available as well as models with a timer. The water flow is regulated by a propeller consisting of either a ceramic or a steel shaft. Ceramics are significantly higher quality and usually last longer. With many models, the pressure can be regulated and individually adjusted. The most important values when it comes to the performance of a pump, the flow rate of liters per hour and the maximum head, which is usually given in centimeters. Hobbyists who want to build their own room well can orient themselves on that.
Tip: Some room wells have so-called foggers, or they can also be purchased easily. They provide a mist effect, with the finest particles of water standing over the room well like a vapor cloud.

Clean the room well

Indoor fountain in pyramid shape

In a pyramid-shaped indoor fountain, the water runs very nicely from top to bottom

Zimmerbrunnen filters dirt like dust and Co. from the air. These particles accumulate in the water over time and thus promote the formation of algae and germs. The best way to do that is to prevent it with a regular water change about once a month.Optically not very appealing and more suitable for larger room wells are special filter cotton or sponge filter. They are placed a short distance from the pump and clean the flowing water like an additional filter. They must also be washed out at least once a month.
Once or twice a year, a thorough cleaning is carried out, in which the room well is completely dismantled and each part is thoroughly cleaned. This includes:

  • a complete water change (depending on the model, simply pour out or pump out)
  • descale the pump
  • Clean filter and replace if necessary
  • Thoroughly clean the individual parts
  • Clean hoses and pipes (at best with pressure)

To avoid algae

Algae are not only an optical problem of indoor wells, they are also breeding grounds for germs and pathogens. They form a greenish and "slippery" layer on the surface of the room well, can become an odor nuisance and even damage the pump. Therefore, from the beginning, you should make sure that they can not commit themselves.
To avoid algae, the water temperature must be kept as low as possible. When choosing the location, bear in mind that direct sunlight promotes algae growth and, in addition, heats the water, which also makes algae thrive. Better is a half-shady place with some distance to the windows. A regular water change is essential in the fight against algae. Also, you should always keep the pump on: Algae can develop much better in still water than in circulating water.

sphere fountain

In a ball well, the water usually bubbles up from an opening

If that is not enough to prevent algae formation, you can resort to so-called water sanitizers: These not only purify the water from algae, but also destroy germs at the same time. Likewise, there are a variety of water additives in the trade with the same effect. Or you can use a so-called UV or UV-C filter in your pump, which irradiates the water with ultraviolet light that kills harmful organisms. These lamps are also known from swimming pools or garden ponds. This solution is more suitable for larger room wells.

Prevent lime

Conventional tap water contains a lot of lime. For indoor fountains you should therefore use better distilled, boiled or filtered water. But even in this there are remains of lime, which are slowly filtered out by means of the pump and thus settle in the well and the pump itself. Kalk attacks all the materials of the room well, makes rubber parts quickly porous and can even paralyze the pump. To avoid this, use either special water additives or conventional limescale cleaners such as vinegar cleanser or highly diluted vinegar essence, which will let you through the system from time to time.

Keep germs at bay

The problem is that germs are invisible to the naked eye. By evaporation or splashing water - both inevitable in a room well - but spread very quickly over the air and in the entire room. This means that you should really change the water consistently and regularly from day one. Some also put some salt in the water. However, this is only advisable if both the fountain and the pump have no metallic parts - these otherwise start to rust. Better is the addition of a special care product in the form of a water additive or a water sanitizer.
