Extend rubber tree by offshoot - Ficus elastica

The Content Of The Article:

Only a rubber tree is usually too little for lovers of this decorative plant. But the houseplant, which belongs to the genus Ficus Elastica, can easily be multiplied. If the tree has become too large for the flat and grown too high, it must be cut back, this pruning can be used as a cutting for a new tree. But even if no pruning is to take place, some new shoots can be used in the spring to propagate the popular, evergreen plant.

Win offspring

If you want to multiply your rubber tree, you usually take cuttings for one or more offshoots that you have previously separated from the tree. This is the easiest way to make an offshoot and, on request, get many new plants of the popular Ficus Elastica. Because this method is simple and safe, as most cuttings rooted and thus create new offshoots. The right time for the extraction of the offshoots:
  • in spring, when the new shoots appear
  • these are broken by hand
  • all year round when a mother plant has become too big
  • just cut the trunk at the desired height
  • do not dispose of the cut tip but use it as an offshoot
Tip: The pruning on the trunk does not harm the rubber tree, because below the interfaces, new shoots quickly form, covering them up. Cover the interface with wound wax for trees so that the wound can heal.

Cuttings win

If cuttings are to become offshoot, then it should be decided here for beautiful, straight shoots, so that the offshoot can grow straight from the beginning. The shoots on which a new leaf should already grow, can be easily removed by hand on the trunk. The juice that is discarded here should be gently blotted on the trunk, possibly provide the bleeding area with wound wax. Also, the milky liquid on the removed cuttings should be removed carefully with a clean, dry cloth. The newly obtained cuttings are handled as follows:
  • Shoot put in a glass with water
  • always make sure that enough water is available
  • Leaves should not come into contact with the water
  • Ideally place in a warm and bright location
  • no direct sunlight,
  • otherwise the leaf on it could burn
  • the rooting can last up to three months, sometimes even longer
  • In the meantime, there can be a week-long standstill
  • If the leaves on the shoot are green and juicy, the shoot is alive
Tip: A cuttings can also be put into soil immediately without roots, but must always be kept well wet. But not always succeed in this way the rooting and the offshoot stunted. In order to promote rooting in the soil, it is increasingly recommended to add cinnamon powder to the stump before placing the cuttings in the soil. Whether this makes sense, has not yet been explored.

Win offspring with tribe

If the mother tree has become too big, it must be cut. This is the right time to win a new offshoot that has already reached a certain height. Rubber trees can reach a height of four meters. If they are prevented from growing up in the apartment from the ceiling, they simply continue to crouch in the top. To prevent this, the rubber tree on the trunk can be shortened to the desired height. However, it should also be noted that around the interface new shoots arise, which also grow rapidly. Therefore, the interface should be chosen at a height where the rubber tree can be given the opportunity to grow upwards again for a few years. With the remainder, removed trunk, then proceed as follows:
  • depending on how long the cut tip is, this can be divided again
  • so several offshoots can be won
  • These are placed in a glass or, depending on their size, in a vase of water
  • Avoid water contact with existing leaves
  • warm and bright
  • After about three months, the roots form
  • if they are big enough, they can be planted
Tip: If the trunk is cut, it should always be used only a sharp, well-cutting and previously with pure alcohol disinfected secateurs. Because the cut is not smooth but frayed, this can damage the rubber tree. If a pruner is not disinfected prior to cutting, it may adhere to bacteria that may get to and into the interface and damage the plant.

If strong roots have formed on the cuttings after three months, then the offshoot can be planted. It makes sense, if a glass or a transparent vase was used for the rooting, because then from the outside already the right time is recognizable when the offshoots are allowed into the ground. When planting, therefore, the following should be considered:
  • when the roots are about2-3 cm long, can be planted
  • use only a small pot for the small offshoot
  • create a drainage above the drain hole
  • Use Kiesel for this
  • over it comes planting fleece
  • Put half of the earth in the pot
  • Use it carefully so that the fragile roots do not damage it
  • Carefully pour in the remaining soil, press lightly
Tip: Especially the new, small offshoots are still quite vulnerable, so they should be regularly scanned for spider mites or thrispe and other pests, especially if they are offered an outdoor location.

Substrate & soil

Normal potting soil for indoor plants is also suitable for the new offshoot of Ficus elastica. This is usually also traversed with compost and so has enough fertilizer in the beginning to ensure the growth of new plants. Alternatively, garden soil can also be used with a peat-sand mixture. However, the soil should not be too firm, so that the small roots have the opportunity to spread and grow. If the ground is too solid, it could otherwise be that the offshoot does not develop and stunt as the roots are literally crushed by the earth.

Pouring and fertilizing

If the offshoot was used in fresh potting soil, then fertilization is not necessary for the time being, because the fresh soil has enough nutrients for the beginning. After about three months, however, the new rubber tree can be regularly supplied with a fertilizer for green houseplants. When fertilizer is given, attention must always be paid to the manufacturer's instructions, because every type of fertilizer, for example liquid fertilizer or granular long-term fertilizer, behaves differently. When casting should also be considered the following:
  • the offshoot needs a lot of water at the beginning
  • therefore should be poured regularly
  • The earth should always be kept slightly moist
  • so root growth can be accelerated
  • However, waterlogging should be avoided at all costs
  • so pour off excess water from the plate half an hour after pouring

The rubber tree needs a lot of light and brightness to thrive. Therefore, if the offshoots were taken in the spring, this is a good time, because the days are getting longer and there is more natural light. As the days get warmer, the cuttings in the water-filled vases or jars can be moved out to a bright but sheltered place. However, night frost should definitely be avoided. However, as a rule, the small containers in which the cuttings are located are put into the sheltered interior quickly in the morning, and in the evening in the evening. However, direct sunlight should be avoided. If the offshoots have been planted after rooting, the same conditions apply to the ideal location. This should therefore look like this:
  • bright and warm
  • on warm days in spring on balcony or terrace
  • Choose a sheltered place here
  • do not put in the direct sun
  • if raised in the room, choose the brightest place of the apartment
  • a windowsill without direct sunlight is ideal here
Tip: The growing rubber tree should be rotated more often. So he does not grow unilaterally to the light but develops a straight trunk.
Anyone who already owns a rubber tree can use it to pull many new small plants over offshoots. It is very easy and also for the untrained hobby gardener and plant lovers to win cuttings. However, a little patience is required, as the rooting can take up to three months or more. However, most offshoots form roots after this time and later develop into a magnificent tree, if the few care instructions for this are respected.
