Sage in the pot

Because of its essential oils, the true sage was allowed to be aromatic. This finds its use on the one hand as a medicinal plant and on the other as a kitchen spice. Here, a distinction is made between different types of sage, where some varieties can only be used medically, as these are too hot for the kitchen. Sage flowers in different ways and looks good too. Loosely, the herb can spread over several square feet, but that depends on whether the herb is planted in the right place. Time of cutback

In order to use the sage freshly, leaves of the plant can be cut off in each season. If leaves are cut vigorously in early summer, the sage will sprout again in the same summer and it can be harvested a second time. In late autumn, a real pruning can be made. Here everything is harvested what you need, the rest either stops or the whole plant is trimmed. However, the herb is much better over the winter, if not cut too hard. This applies especially to the very sensitive varieties. However, the normal kitchen sage is quite tough, which is why he drives out well in the spring. Up to 5 cm, the shoots can be cut back in February. After this wintry pruning, the sage grows bushier and gets new shoots. It is important that if there are already new shoots formed, no pruning takes place. In the spring, however, can also be cut. This is recommended especially when the leaves are not used. Ideally here is the month of March.

How is sage cut?

If the plant is only reduced in size, it can be cut away to feel, which is apparently superfluous. A radical cut is also tolerated by sage, but this should be done if in spring. In no case should be cut, if long new drifts have formed on the plant. These should have time to regrow. Old stems and leaves can be cut out later. Should one approach a radical section rather carefully, it is possible to cut the plant only on one side.
Only when new shoots have formed on one side, the other side is to be cut. But the normal sage is usually absolutely cut tolerant, because after a cut, the sage branches and grows denser than before. There is also the possibility to cut into the old wood of the plant, however, it is advisable to cut only half of the plant, because it takes a while until this part is grown properly again.

Increase sage plants

If more plants are desired by the fragrant sage in the garden, then the true propagation of cuttings is a good way to multiply the plant. The best months are July to late summer. During propagation, the plant should not bloom, otherwise buds and flowers must be removed. To multiply the plant, the first young shoot should first be cut off with a sharp knife about 6 cm deep, just below the leaf crown. The lower ones are then scraped off so that the cuttings only have at least three pairs of sheets at the end. Now the cuttings are planted in the sowing soil and poured carefully. Here the earth should always be moist. Even better, the clone grows at a high humidity, which is why it is advisable to halve a plastic bottle and then put it over the pot with the cutting. Should the bottle fog then simply turn off the lid of the bottle. After some time, when the cuttings are well rooted, they can be transplanted from the protected pot directly into the soil. Another option is to cut the cuttings right after cutting them into a glass of water. After about 2 weeks this should then have developed enough roots, so that it can be transplanted directly into the soil.

Now, the sage can be used in many ways. Whether dried or fresh, this herb helps in the form of a tea for abdominal pain, in admixture with water for gingivitis or sore throat. Also, it is ideal for the sauna and cooking has long been indispensable. Due to its antibacterial effect it is also used for wounds or inflammations. Added to this is that the sage with proper composition has a pronounced anti-sweat effect. Most importantly, sage is known to have an effect on sore throats, hoarseness and coughing. For this purpose, there is sage in the form of sweets, tea and as an alcoholic extract for drops.The sage plant belongs most likely in the garden, grows tirelessly and is easy to care for. Only one plant can grow up to one square meter.

  • If you want to cut your sage, you can do it with a hedge trimmer and a straight cut.
  • An oblique cut as with other plants and a special attention when cutting on new shoots is usually not necessary because the sage is known as a particularly robust plant.
