Build sandstone wall: wall and grout sandstones properly: wall

Even in ancient times, the Romans knew how to use the decorative sandstone properly, so that some of the then built buildings, arenas and aqueducts still stand today and can be admired. Sandstone is a very popular product, for example to build a wall in your home garden. But the walls must be considered a lot, so that the work later also holds long. Which materials are additionally required and how bricked is explained in the following article.

Sandstone - definition

Sandstone is a very soft rock, which is therefore easy to work with. Especially a sandstone wall laid out in the garden can be a true biotope and thus also ecologically very valuable. However, this is more the case with a drywall. So the sandstone can be installed in two variants:
  • alsTrockenmauer
  • The stones are placed on each other without any binding agents
  • are wedged together so they hold
  • Sandstones are being bricked
  • Installed with mortar or glue
  • important here is the right substance
  • otherwise the wall could not last long
However, both techniques are fundamentally a natural stone wall that fits well in semi-natural gardens.
Tip: Before a wall is built, the building law of the country must also be observed in your own garden. This can vary from community to community. But from a height of two meters, a static calculation must be carried out before the construction and the construction approved. This also applies to sandstone walls.

Tools and materials

Before the construction of the sandstone wall, whether as a drywall or mortar, the appropriate tools and the materials used should be provided. Then the work is faster by hand. For this you need:
  • Guideline for the construction of the foundation
  • spade
  • Jogger
  • spirit level
  • rubber hammer
  • gravel and sand
  • Concrete for foundation in bricked sandstone
  • Mineral mixture and building sand at foundation drywall
  • lime mortar
Tip: As a rule, there is not a shaker in every garden shed. But to fix the foundation, this is needed. However, a purchase is unnecessary, because even shakers can be borrowed on a daily basis in well-stocked retail or DIY stores.

Foundation for grouted sandstone wall

Wall

If a sandstone wall is grouted during construction, it needs a concrete foundation. So that the stability of the later wall is given, the foundation should be treated as follows:
  • Dig trench
  • at least 40 cm deep, better up to 80 cm
  • slightly wider than the desired wall width
  • Fill in five to ten centimeters of sand
  • solidify well
  • Use joggers
  • give it about five to ten centimeters of gravel layer
  • just as well stamp and solidify
  • At least 20 centimeters of concrete come on top
  • let dry well before it goes to the walls
Tip: In order for the foundation and the subsequent wall to be pulled straight, a guideline should be used before lifting. For this purpose, two small sticks are inserted into the ground at both ends of the foundation, between which a string is fastened. Along this, the foundation is being dug straight out.

Matching mortar

Important is the matching grout when building a sandstone wall. Many tips are circulating on the net, but not all are good and correct. Thus, natural stone mortar can be used for a conventional natural stone wall, but for the sandstone wall this is rather not suitable. Therefore, when choosing the right mortar for the sandstone wall, pay particular attention to the following:
  • Sandstone consists of 50% sand as sedimentary rock
  • has a layer structure
  • therefore sandstone is very soft
  • Mortar and grout should always be softer than the stone
  • Use NHL lime for grouting
  • this is hydraulic, natural lime
  • is available in different grain sizes
  • Use a 4 mm grit to set the stones
  • for later smooth grouting a grain size between 1 mm and 2 mm
If the right mortar is used in the form of NHL lime, this gives the sandstone a long stability, since it is an even softer mass than sandstones.
Tip: Often, trass mortar is recommended as a joint compound for the sandstone wall. However, this is unsuitable, as it promotes the weathering of sandstone. Exposed trass mortar surfaces absorb water and pass it on to the sandstone.

Construction of the sandstone wall

Once the foundation has been laid and the right mortar has been obtained, the sandstone wall can be built. In contrast to the dry stone wall should be taken here when buying the sandstones, that they all have the same shape and size. The stones can be purchased standardized in well-assorted specialized trade. Here different standard sizes are offered, which are easier to stack and grout. During the construction of the sandstone wall, the procedure is as follows:
  • Just straighten the guideline
  • Apply three centimeters of mortar on the foundation
  • Lay first sandstone
  • align with the guideline
  • Tap the stones with a rubber mallet
  • so even small differences in height are compensated
  • Check with spirit level
  • Fill butt joints with mortar
  • Put mortar on the first row of stones
  • Continue with the next row of sandstones
The first steps are repeated until the wall has reached the desired height. It should be paid to the beautiful look and especially the better condition, that the stones are set with an offset in each row. The butt joints should not be directly above each other. It looks nice when the joints are always in the middle of the other sandstones.
Tip: In well-stocked trade, there is a corresponding advice, which stones are suitable for the desired look. Here, a distinction is mainly made between grooved and natural optics.

Foundation for drywall

Drywall

The foundation for building a natural drywall is less expensive. The procedure is as follows:
  • dig out about forty centimeters deep
  • a little wider than later wall
  • Fill in the mineral mixture
  • should be filled about thirty inches high
  • Building sand is poured on top of this
In the building sand, the first layer of sandstone for the drywall is strongly pressed, so that this solid is anchored in the sand. The stones can also be knocked into the sand layer with a rubber mallet.

Construction of the drywall

Since the drywall is a natural stone wall in which animals should find a place in the interstices, stones are usually used for the construction, which are not quite even and even. These are simply put on top of each other. Earth can also be applied between the individual layers. This later supports the vegetation by plants. If there are very large gaps between the individual quarry stones, these are filled with small pieces of stone. So they are under tension and hold each other. Above all, a drywall offers the following advantages:
  • adapts to the natural garden
  • own biotope for many animals and plants
  • Planting provides more stability
Tip: If you want to provide many native animals with a natural habitat in their garden, you decide to build a drywall. Second favorable side effect, the construction is faster by hand, since neither concrete nor mortar must be used.
