The Content Of The Article:

You want to plant snapdragons and do not know what to pay attention to? No problem, because we will explain what is important.

snapdragons

The snapdragon (Antirrhinum) is happy all over the country and for many decades since its greatest popularity. Especially as it is one of the really undemanding flowering plants and can be planted easy to care almost everywhere.

From our ancestors, the native snapdragon was kept more and more in the cottage gardens. The reason for this, of course, was, of course, also that snapdragons are perfect as cut flowers.

There are three types

In general, a distinction is made in the snapdrag among the smaller dwarf-mouth, conventional snapdragons and the large shrubs-snapdragons.

┬╗Dwarfish Mouths:

Dwarf gullies reach a stature height of 15 to 20 centimeters and can be optimally used as bedding borders.

┬╗Conventional snapdragons:

Conventional snapdragons reach a stature height of up to 50 centimeters and can therefore be counted among the low shrubs.

┬╗Perennial Snapdragon:

The large shrubs and snapdragons look very beautiful and can reach a stature height of up to 100 centimeters.

┬╗Site selection

Snapdragons are in principle very well clear with all soils. Only a sunny location they prefer over a moderately half-shady spot clearly. Furthermore, snapdragons are also suitable for the design of rockeries and as cemetery plants.

Snapdragons can easily be kept as potted plants. So you see, for example especially beautiful in a pot garden. Incidentally, the dwarf gullies are especially suitable for balcony planting.

┬╗Sowing

You can either raise snapdragons on the window sill from March on or sow directly in the field from the end of April until May. Whereby the plantlets generally put away nocturnal ground frosts again and again.

Tip:

From April onwards, in the gardening market, more and more snapdragons (small shrubs) will be offered in the greenhouse, which you can plant immediately in the field.

When sowing and also planting you should always make sure that you place the individual plantlets with sufficient distance to the next plant to prevent the so-called L├Âwenmaulrost.

Maintain snapdragon properly

┬╗Promote new flowers:

Snapdragons bloom from July to October in many colors such as yellow, pink, white, orange, pink, red and purple - sometimes even multicolored. If you now quickly pluck the flowers that have just faded away again, new ones are formed immediately.

┬╗Watering:

Of course, you should also water the plants during long dry periods, whereby you absolutely must avoid waterlogging. In principle, the rule of thumb is that snapdragons get along better with dryness than with moisture.

┬╗Fertilization:

During growth, you should provide the snapdrag with organic fertilizer (such as compost) if needed. Alternatively, you can of course apply a conventional fertilizer all around the flowers. But you should fertilize sparingly.

┬╗Winter protection:

Snapdragons are not hardy! But their flower seeds can easily stay in the ground over the winter months and re-emerge by themselves next spring. However, this requires that the flowers remain as long as possible in the bed.

Otherwise, you can have your snapdrags overwinter in a greenhouse, conservatory or cool room as houseplants.
