The hedgehog cactus has attractive flowers and thorns. Depending on the variety it is upright growing, stocky or long-growing and creeping. They form at the top branches where the funnel-shaped flowers also appear. The cactus can survive low temperatures well and unfolds its bloom in the summer.
The spherical cactus can reach up to five meters high and reach a diameter of one meter. But in his own garden he is not so big, because this takes up to a hundred years. However, most varieties of these cacti do not flower, but have a considerable thorn dress.
Tip: Cacti and the succulents with their fleshy leaves have the advantage that they can store long water and thus survive a longer dry period. If a rock garden was created only with these plants, frequent watering is unnecessary, even in summer.
The spherical cacti have a thorn cushion, the flowers formed in summer are bronze or purple. These form on the head of the cacti. The following year, small red berries form, which are not edible.
Ferro Cactus
Also under this Latin name many different varieties are summarized again. These desert cacti have powerful thorns that are hooked at the ends. These cacti can grow up to 1.60 meters in the open air and can reach a circumference of up to one meter.
Some 50 different varieties are known from these desert cacti, which have the following characteristics:

  • pretty flowers in different colors
  • yellow, white, pink or red

The feature of these cacti is their individual body without side shoots. In early autumn or in summer, the yellow, silky flowers form. The areoles are white-tipped and sit on the tattered ribs. This cactus is a small, up to 15 cm high and 10 cm wide.
This is the largest family of cacti. About 400 different varieties belong to this. They tend to form groups, the bodies are usually stocky and spherical or columnar. Further features of these varieties are:

Opuntia - Opuntia

  • disk-shaped, thorn-studded limbs forming a body
  • also species without thorns are known
  • different species make flowers
All species of this genus grow small and only up to 20 inches high. They grow spherical or cylindrical and have no ribs. The thorns are sitting on the small warts. Pediocactus blooms in colors of white, magenta or yellow. The flowering time is in spring, but already in the fall, the first buds are formed. Later, reddish-brown fruits are formed.
The Thelocactus is characterized mainly by its spherical shape and the colorful thorns. The different species bloom in different colors from white to pink to violet, also yellow flower colors are represented. Other features include the following:
  • be 25 to 40 inches high
  • in diameter up to 20 centimeters
  • the thorns sit on warts


Agave varieties

Agaves belong to the succulents, even if they are not a cactus species. The special thing about agaves is that they bloom only once in their lives. Therefore, it is more of a hardy plant for the hardy rock garden. After all, having a flower is very rare, as it requires decades of growth, but it can live up to 100 years. If the agave has enough space, it can become very large. Further properties of the plant are the following:
  • very dangerous and pointed end thorns
  • care should be taken with a household with small children
  • Protect against contact with end spines, put on wine corks
  • the green, rich, thick leaves grow from the middle
  • makes many offshoots around
Varieties Yucca
Yuccas are very suitable as companion plants for cactuses in a rock garden. Again, there are different varieties of yucca:
  • short stature
  • form a single head up to 50 centimeters high
  • variegated varieties
  • There are also Yucca plants that form a trunk, these are known under Yucca palm
  • If they are older than ten years, flowers form
Hardy cacti and succulents, there are many varieties that can be combined well in a rock garden. So there are also early and late flowering, which together cultivated in the summer guarantee a flowering cactus garden. In winter, the rock garden is then evergreen and continues to provide an attractive eye-catcher in the garden. Because cacti and succulents do not need much water as they store it, they survive a prolonged dry period and are very easy to care for on account of their origin, the desert.
