Building, laying and planting creek of concrete yourself: water

Running water miraculously revives a garden. Only a few plots of land have a natural stream. If you want to create a flowing water on your property, then the creation of an artificial stream is an alternative. For even a well-designed stream enchants the garden.

How should the brook be created?

First comes the idea. Where does a stream run and how should it be designed? Should it be a slowly flowing stream of meadows, a wild and densely overgrown natural stream or a mountain stream rushing over hill and dale. Nothing is impossible. Even waterfalls can be realized. What materials should be used to design the stream? Once the decision has been made, the required material must be put together. The stream is marked and excavated. A small pond at the end of the stream is recommended. He later catches the circulating water and offers space for small fish. A circulation pump pushes the water in an unending cycle up to the highest point of the stream, so that the flow of water never ends. The pump must not be designed too small. Otherwise the water will only splash as a small trickle. A specialist dealer will gladly advise you which pump is the right one for the planned watercourse.

A stream for every garden

A modeled stream bed made of concrete, in which natural stones are inserted before curing, is very natural. A commercially available additive makes the concrete waterproof. Without addition, the concrete would draw water, which will be missing later. There are no limits to the design of a stream with this method. Prefabricated brook stones made of concrete or plastic are also available on the market. They are available as a single element or as a complete set. They are very easy to move. Once the ditch has been dug for the stream, the half shells are simply laid from bottom to top in the trench. Such a brook is completed quickly. Disadvantage of this variant is that the half shells largely dictate the shape of the stream.
A cost-effective and variable alternative is the construction of a stream with pond liner. Even with this method, a stream can be designed according to your own ideas. The creek can wind through the garden, make small waterfalls or rush down a slope.
Design elements complete the look of the stream. The edges and the creek bed of each creek are covered with decorative natural stones of different sizes. They are available commercially or, more cheaply, directly from a quarry. The natural stones fix pond liner, they cover the edges of the artificial stream and create a perfect transition. Ferns, grasses and other aquatic plants integrate the stream in the garden nature.

Build a concrete creek yourself

To get a picture of the stream, it is first staked out. A brook looks more natural if it is not running straight, but curves in curves from the source to the pond or basin. There is a lot to consider when you want to build and create a stream yourself. For the stream to flow smoothly, a height difference of about 4% must be given. A stream is about 75 cm wide and about 40 cm deep. So that the water does not flow down too fast, so-called traffic waves are installed at a distance of about one meter. At these thresholds, the water accumulates later and flows more slowly.
The concrete creek can be applied directly to the roughened surface of the excavated stream. Indented iron bars secure the concrete against tearing and frost damage. With a trowel, the concrete can be shaped according to your own imagination. Coves and river banks can be formed and steep edges arise. Especially interesting is the incorporation of stones. Later on the water will break and a natural picture will emerge. Even before a test run, care must be taken that they are so high on the side edges of the stream that no water can run over the shore. If the trial runs, the wheels of the creek are covered with natural stones and coarse gravel. Even the small garden pond at the brook outlet is covered with natural stones at the edges to create a natural look.

Water Lilies - Nymphaea

The natural stones in the creek and on the edge areas provide space for suitable plants. Grasses, ferns and aquatic plants are abundant in the trade. A suitable and lush planting to the edge of the stream with seasonal plants ensures visual harmony. Especially beautiful effects bring the brook also selected stones that are placed in the middle of the stream. They alter the movement of the water and bring vivid effects. In nature, a brook is never the same width. Even in the garden, a stream is particularly natural if it has different widths. The banks of the garden creek can be designed by piled stones. When the creek is completed and the banks are laid out and planted, the creek quickly develops its own life as the seasons go by. Just like the streams in the great outdoors.

A small fish in the garden pond

When the brook flows into a pond, the larvae of the mosquitoes are also stored here. A simple remedy brings the insertion of fish. Not only that fish occupy a garden pond. They also perform really useful tasks. They reliably eat away the mosquito larvae. Just like insects that fall into the pond water. Their digestion brings nutrients into the pond, which in turn are available to the pond plants. Many pond fish, however, are very large, which can certainly bring problems. The smallest carp in Central Europe, the Bitterling, can solve the problem. He is about 5 cm tall and belongs to the absolutely peaceful flock-fish. He is an omnivore and even kills the algae in the pond. A small fish that fits perfectly in a natural pond.

Worth knowing about creeks made of concrete

A beautiful stream can enhance the appeal of the respective pond and help to create an area of peace and relaxation in the garden. Because the rippling of a stream has a thoroughly relaxing and soothing effect on the human soul. Often the creek is built of concrete. Because the concrete is a material that can be very easy to bring in the desired shape and once cured and remains stable in this form. If you want to build a creek of concrete, but this can also be done very easily:
  • It is advisable to prefabricate the respective route, where the belly run should run, in advance in the ground.
  • This allows the stream to be dug out of the ground with a small shovel.
  • In this way you get a creek bed, which is of course not yet waterproof. This is only through the concrete.
However, once the basic form for the streambed has been laid underground, it is easy to mix concrete and evenly distribute it in the streambed. Of course, care must be taken to ensure that there are no vacant spaces where concrete has not been distributed but the concrete covers the entire stream bed. Otherwise, it can eventually lead to a rapid loss of water.
  • In the event that the creek bed was lined with concrete, a certain waiting period must be taken into account. And that until the concrete has hardened.
  • Theoretically, the stream can then be started and water filled.
  • However, it usually turns out that conventional concrete is not 100% dense when it is constantly rinsed with water.
  • To prevent this, it is also advisable to apply sludges in front of the water inlet, as used for sealing concrete wells.
  • If necessary, the concrete creek can also be smeared several times with the sludge.
  • Then the stream should be tight in any case, so that the water can then be embedded in the concrete creek.
Of course, if a concrete creek is used, then it does not usually fit perfectly with the natural shape of the pond. For this reason, it is also necessary to change the respective stream. Of course there are no limits to creativity. Usually smaller ornamental pebbles are sprinkled in the stream, which can then be attached even with a small amount of concrete. At the edge of the stream larger stones can be placed to make the transition to green more beautiful.
