Maintaining Strelitzia - Important Care Instructions for Gorgeous Plants

The Content Of The Article:

If you own a Strelitzia, you surely want the bird of paradise flower to live up to its name. However, this only works if you care for the plant sufficiently.

Strelitzia like it warm

Strelitzia belong to the more elaborate plants and require absolutely use. For example, it is important in the care of Strelitzia that the framework conditions are right. Otherwise, problems quickly arise, ranging from small or absent flowers to pest infestation.

For example, it is very useful to plant the Strelitzia in a bucket that you prefer to place on a rollable base. So you can easily make sure that the evergreen plant, which belongs to the banana family, always stands in a perfect location. This may well be in the sun, after all, the plant comes from South Africa and trains larger flowers, the lighter it stands. The bucket should be sized large enough. Although the domestic variant does not match the size of the original bird of paradise flower, it can reach a height of almost two meters.

Pay attention to the following:

  • permeable earth
  • sunny, at least very bright location
  • Temperature between 10 and 30 degrees Celsius
  • enough water
  • high humidity
  • suitable location: kitchen and bathroom (humidity)

Important: keep an eye on temperature and humidity

It is quite possible that you will set up the Strelitzia outdoors during the summer months. Just make sure that the midday heat does not exceed the 30 degree limit, as the plant may well suffer from the heat. If the humidity is generally too low, the natural defenses of the plant are weakened, which can manifest itself in dying roots or in the settlement of pests. If you are unsure whether the room air is not too dry (for example, in the winter by heating), you can regularly water the leaves with a spray bottle.

So pour the Strelitzia right

Although the bird of paradise flower is one of the plants that consume a lot of water, you can go wrong with watering and literally drown the plant. Already the choice of the earth helps at this point. Choose a loose mixture of potting soil, gravel, sand and a little clay powder. Through the clay, the earth can absorb less water, while gravel and sand prevent the earth from becoming pinned and solid. When casting, pay attention to the following points:

  • never let the root ball dry
  • best casting time: when the upper layer of soil is dry
  • Use low-lime water (rainwater, stagnant mineral water)
  • Allow water to stand before pouring to reach room temperature
  • be sure to avoid waterlogging
  • much in the summer, less in the winter

This is how Strelitzia is fertilized

The fertilization period of the Strelitzia is between the late spring months and the late summer months. You can quite ordinary ordinary fertilizer use and give him according to the manufacturer in the irrigation water. Slowly reduce the fertilizer amount downwards. It does less harm if you fertilize your bird of paradise flower too little than you over-provide it. An oversupply often leads to the absence of flowers.

Tip:

Do you forget to fertilize? Then you can fall back on long-term fertilizer in the form of a rod.

Strelitzia do not cut, but clean out

Some plants need to be pruned regularly so that they form flowers or grow magnificently. The Strelitzie accounts for this work. If you remove leaves, you can even damage the plant. It is important that you remove dried leaves in time and remove the withered flowers. Such dead and dead materials weaken the plant and often cause pests to spread.

Tip:

The flowers of the Strelitzia are ideal for flower vases. To do this, cut off the stem of the flower with a clean cut deep at the point of attachment.

How to turn Strelitzia properly

If you choose a bucket that is too small at the beginning, you will have to repot the strelitzia relatively quickly. Whether the plant has grown out of its pot, you can test with a simple trick. If the bucket wobbles already, if you touch the Strelitzie only slightly, it needs a much larger pot. Alternatively, take a look at the water outlets of the pot. If you see the tips of the roots here, or if the roots already reach through the holes, you have to hurry. As a rule, this case occurs every three years.

Basically, you have to pay very little attention when repotting. Only the roots of the Strelitzia are sensitive and must not be damaged.Since the roots break easily, we recommend that you do not shake the old plant substrate from the root, but completely rinse it off. However, this procedure is only necessary if you do not use a backing and want to prevent substrate from falling to the floor. Otherwise, you can plant the Strelitzia with the soil hanging at the root directly into a new bucket.
