Pull sunflower as a potted plant - Tips for sowing and care

Sunflowers are known to us. They like to stand in gardens and front gardens, over bushes, rose bushes and sometimes far over fences and hedges. Their heads lean towards the sun and it almost seems as if they welcome the sun in the morning and say goodbye in the evening.

But sunflowers do not necessarily need the garden. They also thrive in pots wonderfully. Provided you stick to our tips.

Plant or pull yourself?

You can easily buy pre-grown sunflowers planted in decorative pots in stores. However, you can also sow sunflowers on their own and raise them in a pot. The seeds are available in nurseries, DIY stores and specialist shops. Of course, you can also collect seeds of sunflowers from the garden and sow in the flowerpot.

The joy of the flower, however, will last only a short time, unless you pull the plant directly in a large bucket. For flower pots on the windowsill or on the kitchen table, the smaller varieties are more suitable:

  • Pacino - fully grown it reaches a height of about 30 centimeters (here's for example)
  • Teddy bear - at forty centimeters, this sunflower is suitable for medium sized pots (see here for example)
  • Big Smile - this variety represents the garden sunflower. The flower is sunny yellow and is described in the middle by a black circle. Growth height: up to 30 centimeters
  • Sunspot - this species grows up to 60 centimeters high and has a large flower. Suitable for large flowerpots and tubs (see here for example)

You do not need much to sow. A sufficiently large sized flower pot with drainage hole, potting soil and a bowl that collects the excess irrigation water, are sufficient. You can pull several plants together in one pot. Just keep in mind that in this case you have to choose a bigger pot. If the pot is too small you need to repot the plant, which can damage the sunflower. The sowing is finally very easy:

1 Fill soil into the flower pot. If you have the opportunity to create a drainage, we recommend this option. To do this, place stones, a little styrofoam, potsherds or gravel on the bottom of the pot.

2 Fill the potting soil directly onto the drainage. Compost is perfectly suitable as potting soil, which you can mix with ordinary potting soil.

3 Now the seeds come into play. Depending on the pot size, place between two and ten seeds in the soil. Choose the pairwise sowing. Since not all seeds usually germinate, this procedure later results in a pleasant growth pattern. Simply squeeze the seeds into the ground.

Now you just have to water the plant.

From seed to plant

For sunflower seeds to germinate, they need a lot of water. Therefore, you should water the plants regularly and a lot. We recommend an interval of two days, unless the soil dries up. The sunflower needs permanently moist soil to germinate and form seedlings.

As a rule, you will see within eight days whether your work has succeeded. As soon as you discover the first tender plantlets, wait a few days for them to develop. Depending on how many seeds have expelled, you must now carefully remove individual seedlings from the pot and put in a separate pot:

4 The seedlings are planted about 2.5 centimeters deep into the loose soil. In order for them to have enough room to thrive, a distance of ten centimeters is advised.

5 Continue to water both the newly planted seedlings and the first sown young plants regularly.

6 The pouring interval increases as soon as the plant reaches a height of thirty centimeters.

Location for the sunflower

Actually known as a typical garden plant, the sunflower also prefers a bright and sunny spot in the plant pot. If possible, choose a sill that is in sunlight for most of the day.

Caution: The sunflower is not sensitive to the sun, but can not stand a shadow. Nevertheless, you should make sure that the leaves do not come into contact with a window, as the heat is too great.

Care of the sunflower in the pot

Light and water are the two elements that a sunflower can not do without - this also applies to the potted plants. Always make sure that the soil does not dry out, and water adult plants daily. If you give too much water, your drainage or the drain of the pot comes into play.

It is advisable that you provide sunflower with a nitrogenous fertilizer weekly. This does not necessarily have to be artificial, even a manure made from nettles, horn shavings or compost are suitable for nutrient supply.

" Danger: The sunflower seeds of the small varieties are due to the breeding direction, which is often associated with the spreading of hormones, not eatable, You can therefore easily use artificial fertilizer.

Further care does not need your sunflower. You do not need to remove even blooming flower heads as they continue to grow on the stem. The only reason you should grab a pair of scissors is to dry the flowers. To do this, remove the flower before it has fully opened.
